For the western US if I had to pick one rifle out of my safe it would be my custom wickliffe rifle, single shot, falling block, and in .375 H&H. Yes its 13.5 lbs but could take anything up to elk or big bears.

The Grendel is too much for a Contender.
Get an encore or down-load the Grendel if you must have it on a contender.
Factory grendel loads are not safe in a contender.

The 243 win would be great. Get a McMillan HTG stock with light fill, a 5 contour barrel, fluted and cut to 24 inches. Should be pretty light for a double duty rifle.

The 243 will anchor most any deer in California, especially with the heavy bullets slung fast. Keep your shots to within 300 and it won't be a problem at all.

If you don't mind the relative unpopularity of the 260, its a great cartridge. 139gr Scenars at 2850 is a great LR load. You get more barrel life than the 243 and more bullet options for deer. You could also look at the 6.5x47 Lapua and have great brass available from the get-go. Too many options...

i carried my remington 700 pss 300 win mag hiking the mountians for more than 6 hours a day every weekend during hunting season. it was a workout but it would have been worth it if i had gotten a shot off. i have a 300 yd zero with 180gn noslers. a 300 is alot of money to reload vs a 308 (or 308 based round). i buy powder by the pound (varget forthe 308 and h1000 for the 300), and the varget last for over 120 rounds and the h1000 only does around 70-80. i wish i had listened to the guys at the gun shop when i got the 300 and bought the 308 insted.

True only up to a certain point. I bet that an Indian with a compound bow will outshoot an Indian with a recurve bow I just thought of that one..

By the pound? The only thing that's good for is the smaller container to keep close at hand. You need to buy by the jugs! Anyone know why Alliant sells only in 5lbs jugs instead of 8 lbs?

Or an indian with a KMW .243 topped with a US optics, slingin' DTACs at 3100fps not outshooting some shmuck indian with a savage 308 topped with a bushnell 3200 10x. I've seen it happen...its the indian...really...a really lucky indian...

True that. I once came across an indian shooting a .308 Savage topped with a $1300 IOR while I was shooting a lowly 700P with a Super Sniper.. that indian claimed his scope was busted and it was just mounted though

Sucks on that scope. One dude blew his apart in 9 rounds from a 300 rum. They sent him a new one and it only lasted 40 or so. They say they have the problem corrected, but this time I'm going to wait for the real world reports before I jump on it again. Besides, the S&B may spoil me!

Whoever has the time/money, we should do a desert day and shoot some 800-1200yd targets.

The white rocks at 725yds or so on the angeles range are boring to me now.
I'll see if I can borrow some armor plates to shoot at.

If those are the ones I remember from going there in '72 then try them with a hand gun.

Randall-there are a couple places for long range out here by me. Its about an hour and 45 minutes from your place. You could do 2000 meters if you were up to it.

This is what you need. Swede Mauser M41b. 6.5x55. Will take anything in the lower 48 except bear. Good commercial hunting ammo by several manufacturers. Hornaday light magnum is the hottest. Sub moa performance. Will shoot out to 1000 yards for paper and steel.

And it has back up iron sights if you need them!
