I only know it because I'm doing research for an Afghanistan / Iraq film and he's obviously one of the players besides McChrystal and Petraeus.

I'm not in the service. Pics are cool though!

This picture from basic is by far the best photograph I have of me. I never liked posing for pictures. But this one I enjoyed. It was so nice to be inside with air conditioning. I would have posed for as many pictures as they wanted.

Here are a couple of others.

Yes, you are correct. But for whatever reason, in regards to our AOR we refer to it as the arabian gulf. It's the military, it doesn't make sense.

I have something of a bizarre coin story with respect to him.

My dad worked for the Irish Dept of Foreign Affairs, his last assignment was to OSCE. (Now he just works for OSCE). He went on a business trip somewhere, and met Odierno. Mentioned that his son was in CalGuard and in Iraq at the time. This, reasonably enough, suprised Odierno... The sons of foreign ambassadors tend not to be officers in the US Army. Outside of a 'by the way' conversational email to me, however, sort of 'you might be interested to know that I met...', not much more was made of it.

A while later I get an email from my dad with the subject line "Medal."

Text as follows:
Quote:
Apparently my meeting with General Odierno had a result. To-day, I was presented with a medal (or coin as he described it) from the Joint Chiefs of Staff in appreciation of your service with the US Army by Col. (Blank) the US military adviser here. Its quite attractive - a blue rim with the words The Joint Staff and the five insignias of the different services on one side and the symbolof the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the other. Its really for you, but I will keep it for the present until you finish in Iraq as I don't trust the postal system to get it to you.

He also gave me a book called American Soldier by General Franks. The following dedication was written in the book: "I wish you the best for you and your family during the holiday season and will keep your son in our prayers. The United States is grateful for his work and sacrifices". Thought you might like to know.
I reassured him that he was quite correct not to trust the 'medal' to the postal service, and that I'd appreciate it if he kept it in the embassy vault until I could come and collect it...

So score one for Gen Odierno.

NTM
