The way you water can affect how much is used. Drip irrigation done right really sips the water.

One motivation for gardening at home is to be self sufficient to a degree when SHTF and the trucks stop bringing food to the local Safeway.

Hand water.
I can put the water where it needs to go and I can poke my finger into the soil and decide how much water a plant needs or if I can skip a day.
It puts me out in the garden for a few minutes each day and keeps me in touch with how things are doing and what needs more water and what can get by with less.

It is hard for me to justify that when in the summer I can get 6 ears of corn for a dollar. I know it shouldn't be about the money as the food I grow is 100% organic etc but it's hard when it's costing me so much more than buying. Help motivate me to keep growing.
Your situation may not be the same as mine. I have mineral and water rights and a well. I rarely have to use city water.

Habanaros have an awesome flavor.
I killed my little tree years ago when away from home. They do do well in full sunlight if you want really hot peppers and to damage the plant. I am working on a new one and keep it in an area the gets about 8-9 hours a day.

I can't wait to get home and start a garden. I'm thinking potatoes, cucumbers peppers and maybe some tomatoes. I want to start slow so that I can get the hang of it and with veggies that I actually eat often.

I'm sure meters are coming someday, but the logistics of trying to put meters on tens of thousands of wells is going to be a serious problem and I'll bet it takes decades to accomplish.

I'm not gonna worry until it happens.

Anyone build their own greenhouse? Temps will be cooling down soon. It would be nice to keep my raised beds warm enough to grow some summer veggies

My raised Garden Beds are producing.

So far I have picked a few Tomatoes, Strawberry's, Green Bean's, Radishes and Banana Peppers.

Nothing in any great quantity as of yet. Can't wait for the Green Beans to start kicking in good then I'll blanche and freeze. I'll probably eat the 'maters as fast as I can pick them though.

Planted Lemon and Mandarin trees about 3 months ago, they are starting to bear some fruit as well...
