I want to Volreg my BB WASR (Don't flame me for this)
Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. Prior to 2014, I purchased a BB'ed WASR, and now I would like to Volreg it. However, I do not remember the actual date I purchased the rifle. In order to register it as a BB AW, I need to provide the date I acquired the firearm. Not wanting to run afoul of the law, how and where do I check for the date of purchase/registration so I can fill the forms out correctly?

There are a bunch of registration threads in the legal section to be aware of.

Ak rifles are really easy to convert it featureless. For 10 bucks you can get a stike industries fin grip and thats all you would need as long as the gun is still in the standard configuration.

Are you sure you want to volreg? My understanding is volreg is used for obtaining a federal serial number for an 80%.
I think you just want to register a BBAW through the CA DOJ. I bought mine in 2016 for that same reason, if I want a featureless build I can buy one in the upcoming years. |

OP, I’m not sure you mean volreg.
No flaming here, but here is a very good video called “5 Reasons Not to Register your AR15 of AK47”. Joel Persinger brings up very good points and a real down-to-earth and compelling argument why NOT to submit to California's "assault weapon" registration... especially when there are perfectly good legal options to avoid that. Plenty of us registered stuff back in 1999 when bullet buttons didn't exist.
Anything post 2014 they KNOW you have, so you may as well register. Pistols, they KNOW you have, may as well register. If they pass a ban/reg for featureless semiautos, you'll wish you registered now. Of course, there will be the ultimate crap option of making it NON semi auto. |

I think there may be some inadvertent conflation of terms in this thread.
Vol-Reg or "Voluntary Registration" is typically used to voluntarily register a firearm that was not already DROS'd to the current possesor. Ignoring potential legality for a moment, this process would be used to tie a firearm to the current owner/possessor. Let's say one inherited a rifle from way back when, and did not complete a traditional private party transfer (PPT), but wanted to have said firearm in their name, one could use the volreg form to self-report their current possession. Form is found here: [PDF] http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/volreg.pdf - The current "Bullet Button Assault Weapon" registration is a separate process and should not be confused with the volreg form. BBAW registrations are completed through CRIS/CFARS website after creating a profile here: https://cfars.doj.ca.gov/login.do If one intends to register a current CA defined "bullet button assault weapon" and, for whatever reason volreg'd it previously, it would ALSO need to be registered as "BBAW" in order to abide by SB880/AB1250 or whatever it is to remain legal. As posted in the "BBAW" registration thread, a best approximation on acquisition date/location seems to be working/accepted by CA DOJ BOF. A current reason to utilize volreg prior to BBAW registration is to self-report homebuilt firearms (AR/AK pistols, primarily). A WASR10 rifle that was legally purchased from a dealer within CA should not be volreg'd unless you feel like giving extra money to the state of CA.
