Yep. If you legally own (or legally borrow) large capacity mags, you can use them in a detachable magazine (aka "featureless") rifle. See CA PC 12276.1(a)(1)(A-F), and PC12020(a)(2).

Where you cannot use large capacity mags is in a rifle with a magazine lock. See CA PC 12276.1(a)(2).

I just got my hammerhead grip in the mail today from the father's day sale. I'm stoked to try it out. Now I just need to pick up a pistol buffer tube and a fixed stock.

We are getting a shipment of Rock River Arms and Model 1 Sales tubes in. These will be complete with CAR buffer and buffer spring. Look for those to show up on our secure online store in a few days. Here's a direct link to the pistol tube category on our store:

I checked the PC and it was just the portion of the listed lowers. I still don't get how this has any more legality for pre-ban hi-caps than a mag-locked rifle.

I just had to give the hammerhead a shot , so I picked one up from the exile machine website.

I tried every combination of stock and buffer tube shown on the site , and the one I settled on was the Type 1 configuration...my only issue was I needed a little bit longer buffer tube for my cheek weld to be comfortable.

So I used a full length buffer tube instead of the pistol buffer tube, worked out perfect for me. I took a button head allen bolt, drilled it to the same hole diameter as the vented screw included with most stocks...just thought it looked nicer then the slotted vented screws.

Then I used one of the really short LE Tactical A2 type stocks...it was the perfect length for me ( With the added length of the hammerhead ) and the stock still extends past the full length buffer tube I used...that was important so when I set the rifle down on the buttplate the button head vented screw never touches the ground.

I replaced the flash hider with a DPMS Miculek muzzle brake...to make sure the entire rifle was completely featureless.

Then proceeded to yank off the bullet button, and dig out the old school metal 30 rounders that I couldnt use on the bullet button builds ( I did rebuild them with magpul followers and ranger plates ).

Question....how do you prove that you owned the highcap mags before the ban. Are they marked in some way?

It's my understanding that they have to prove that you DID NOT OWN the mags before the ban...

If they aren't necessarily marked with a date, then maybe they are marked with a manufacture's name... And if lets say that manufacture didnt start making mag's until after the ban that could be a problem. Of course marking's are normally on the floor plate and maybe you replaced the floor plate at some point..

Anyway! The point being, I think as long as you're on the level and everything's on the up and up and you legally owned the mag's preban you should be fine.

It doesnt even matter how the mags are marked , when you buy the rebuild kit what comes in the bag is the mag body...spring...follower...and floorplate.

If your magazine body is rusted/dented/worn out ...you replace it as well.

The entire reason I bought my Socom II was that I had ammo cans full of 20 rounders that my uncle had given me before he died back in my early 20's ( Lets just say that was a long time ago ) They were in awesome shape and usable , I kept them thinking that when I could afford the rifle I really wanted ...they would be available.

It was a completely different story with the AR mags , they werent stored in oring sealed containers and were basically trash and in a box of scrap metal in the garage . It wasnt until becoming a forum member here, and doing a lot of research that I realized I could " Rebuild " those junk magazines with a new mag body as well...all those years I just figured why put new parts into banged up disgusting looking mag bodies that probably wont feed to save their lives.

If I would have known I could have rebuilt those mags including the mag body itself , I would have built my first AR as a featureless and not waited until just now.

This forum is awesome in that respect, I havent even shot my featureless yet...but that will change this coming Monday

I'm digging this configuration... Might have to stock some bare receiver extension tubes and foam sleeves:

Lighten up dude. I'm on Calguns and thought the same thing. I could see your 'tude if someone was spewing something like you can legally use high-caps without a pistol grip period(seems I've seen that somewhere..?), but his error(as well as mine) was on the safe side.
I'm just happy I was in a foreign country(AZ) for a while, and got to use my weapon how it was intended.

Thanks for the orders.

Word's getting out that you don't have to lock up your mags. And you can still add some pretty awesome "features" like holographic sights. Check out the store and pick up an ACE stock or a pistol tube or muzzle brake. Or holographic sight. Ambi-safety, LPK, we're stocking a bunch of other stuff now that works well with the Hammerhead.

Exile Machine - It seems the pictures you have of your weapons have Flash Hiders on them.....wouldnt that make them "featured" rifles? And what's the ruling on muzzle brakes on featureless builds?

Thanks.

Show me which photos you're referring to. Flash hider's a feature and shouldn't be on a CA-featureless rifle. Muzzle brake's OK.

Some of our customers are not in CA, and may prefer to use a flash hider. (Yes we have customers in the free states who prefer a wooden rifle hold).

The first pic looks like a YHM phantom flash hider and the second pic looks like the standard A2 birdcage flash hider. Maybe I am wrong???

Those are both the same YHM muzzle brake. Not a flash hider. In the second photo the tip of the device is cropped out of the picture.

Here's a photo of the device, taken from YHM's website:

I am really digging that bottom configuration...it doesn't look weird and quirky like the monsterman grip (no offense, just IMO)

And the bottom rifle has the same muzzle brake as the top one, it just looks like a A2 cage since its slightly cut out of the picture, look closer

Orders have shipped.

We have a bunch of accessories now on the store that help round out your detachable magazine AR-15 build. ACE & RRA stocks, pistol buffer tubes, parts kits, muzzle brakes, Magpul PMAG rebuild kits, and EOTech holographic sights. High-tech sights are not a listed feature in 12276.1 so why not? More models coming soon.

We added the RRA CAR Operator stock today as well:

We will ship another batch of orders late tonight. Any orders received by 5PM Pacific time will be carted to the post office by dark of night. Post office says they're closed tomorrow so this is the last shipping opportunity till Monday.

(Don't forget if you don't own 30 rounders you can still borrow from a friend at the range as long as he stays nearby, or just drop 10 rounders with your finger.)

Thanks for the orders.

Check/MO accepted as well. Two more days. Three Hammerheads fit nicely into a priority mail flat rate box so that's the best value for your federal reserve notes. Figure you'll build more than one rifle and the sale will be over on the 6th. So at these prices might as well order three.

Big batch of pistol tubes and ACE stocks coming in this week.

Thanks for the orders! One more day and then the sale will be over, so get 'em now while you can. Best deal on shipping is to order three units.

Bump. Sale ends tonight! 23:59 Pacific Time. Don't miss it. Stock up. Three units is your best deal with shipping. Pick up a stock and buffer tube to match.
