Air shotgun help for snakes
Ok I live on property, while i can shoot firearms on my property, its not a good idea for me to shoot rattlers in the summer due to dry grass fires and i dont like to get close enough to shovel them. Whats the best option for an Air shotgun? I have looked at reviews for the Gamo Express but all i can find is its for small snakes. I want one that will kill large rattlers in dry grass a few feet away.
thanks for any help. |

Fine. Personally, I relocate. But if you have kids, grand kids, or stupid dogs that can't leave snakes alone, and don't have the knowledge on how to handle a venomous reptile yourself, you're better off shooting it unfortunately.
My nephews neighbor lost his Rott, from a Coral snake bite last week (just down the road from me). Dog was gone in less than 15 minutes. It wasn't a pretty death. Last edited by Dragunov; 10-19-2019 at 12:25 PM.. |

Says the guy who dose not live there...
We have had both our dogs and livestock bitten so when we see them around our place they die. Skip the air gun and hit them with a shovel or 12ga. Edit: I should have read the whole thing before posting and I would know this is one to stay out of... Last edited by luckylogger6; 10-21-2019 at 10:12 AM.. |

I have a revolver with snake shot, They can still start a fire in dry grass. I'll make you a deal Waynesworld, I drop every rattler i find on your doorstep and see how self righteous you become, lol. If i could, i would shoot every rattler until they are extinct.

Also, if I may say: teach your young how to ID various snakes in your neck of the woods ... it will help to make them THINK when they out playing in the grass and brush where snakes live. Keep them safe through knowledge and self discovery. It's like firearm safety - you CANNOT be there 100% of the time, so you teach them what to do when in the vicinity of a gun and no adults around. Okay, now what to do when discovering a snake and no adults around to hold their hand, how to ID it, what to look for - how to avoid where, and why, snakes prefer certain types of location for hunting and sunning ... avoid accidental bites. And I don't want to sound like a thread crapper - if you need to dispatch a rattlesnake, I understand - I really do. But ... just think about teaching the young, that's all. Thank you for reading ... and the rattlesnakes thank you for respecting and relocating.

Agree, out in the hills or a trail I let them be, on my property they die and go to Rattle Snake Heaven. I mainly get Gopher snakes on my property during the summer months. Those I give them some water, they drink and leave. I usually never see the same snake again.

I don't know of a good a good air shotgun to recommend but let me repeat a suggestion I've given before to with anyone with an issue with rodents or snakes.
Put up lots of owl boxes/ owl nests (very easy to make yourself or you can buy them online). once owls are in your neighborhood they will stay there continue willing to raise their young ones in that area, unless you run out of mice and snakes. Let nature's professional night Hunters go out and hunt for you at the same time night when the snakes are out doing their nighttime hunting. Even if the snakes they are just killing the smaller ones it will mean less big snakes down the road for you. Another plus is instead of wasting that meat once you shoot it, this method would help feed your young upcoming night Hunters. I think the great horned owl is the one you want to attract for the larger snakes but any type is better than nothing. |

How about cutting the dry grass. Kind of like giving them less place to hide and also mitigating the fire danger in the first place, some thing that all of us who own rural property should be doing constantly.

Just kidding, I have Cows that weed and feed, but it take a while to get to all the grass since they eat down my 10 acres, then my neighbors 10 and the other neighbors 5. But, the high grass has nothing to do with if they are there or not. Short grass burns just as easily as long grass. Last edited by Handshaker; 06-14-2019 at 1:50 PM.. |

Learn how to relocate if at all possible.
I would bet ZJ has some great techniques and equipment that are not overly expensive or difficult to use and would be willing to share his knowledge. One of the reasons those rattlers get so fat is from eating rodents that can carry disease.

Yes ^^^ what Garv said - And in addition to rodents, rattlesnakes eat A LOT ... their main diet is lizards. YES ... lizards on ALL species. And know what lizards carry? They carry TICKS! Lime disease ticks - Look at a lizard up close ... around his head ... each lizard always has 4, 5, 8 blood sucking ticks attached to side of their neck area.
Along comes Mr. Rattlesnake ... lizard and ticks ... all in one gulp and gone!

Relocating is fine if you occasionally come across one, but when you find a dozen or two each year it gets kind of tedious. I actually live where there are snakes - lots of them.
Ever walk out on your patio at night and step over a rattler? How about reaching for the garden hose only to find a rattler coiled inside it? Coming home to find your dog's nose as big as a football? Wondering why the tomato plant you are pruning is buzzing at you? Taking the lid off the irrigation valve box and finding a rattler inside? Lifting a bale of hay and finding a rattler underneath? That is so far this year. You guys relocate them all you want; not me. |

You do know its illegal to relocate wild life in calif, right? Dont let a ranger catch you doing it. For all those tree huggers out there. Relocated wild life has a death rate of 75% and usually die a slow painful death.

I have pics of relocated rattlesnakes year after year at/or around the den where I relocated them. They are clearly identified by the blotch patterns on their backs and side panels. They absolutely positively live good healthy lives when relocated. Why did I spend enormous time and energy to take detailed pics, log each one with names and dates? Because I too questioned if they will survive. My extensive research is complete and is confirmed. Relocating rattlesnakes is good for their well being. If you want to create false reasons for not relocating, it’s not necessary ... just dispatch the rattlesnake and be done with it. Or ... relocate these amazing creatures they deserve it. And ... it’s NOT illegal to relocate rattlesnakes. Gee-manee... really??? Gimme-a-break!

I dont need any reason to shoot them, other than they are trespassing on my property. I guess you dont know how to read the California statute. A rattler is wild and it is alive(wildlife). Just because you think its not illegal doesn't make it so. And if they live after relocating doesn't mean you are not breaking the law. Are you willing to call fish and game and bet you wont get cited? I will post here because you are clearly clueless. When asked what someone should do if they find a rattlesnake in their yard, California Department of Fish and Wildlife Biologist Kevin Brennan said, “Nothing. If it’s threatening you or your pet and you’re willing and capable, kill it. Otherwise, just spray it with a stream of water from a hose and it will go away.” Often, however, people relocate the snake to another property. “It is illegal to relocate any species of wildlife in California,” said Brennan. He said doing so is considered abandonment. The reason why is because the animal’s chance of survival is very slim. “They usually die within a matter of weeks.” Last edited by Handshaker; 06-15-2019 at 8:26 AM.. |

A friend deals with them regularly. He calls out a service / local guy to relocate them if possible but dispatches them when necessary using a full size 22 bolt action rifle (think Remington 33) with snake shot. Gives you plenty of reach so you can get the muzzle as close as possible to the head, low noise and little to no flash. If you're still worried, grab a bucket of water when you get the rifle and wet the area once the deed is done.

Its just another case of being influenced by the liberal idiots in calif. Most people that are for relocating have never dealt with an aggressive rattler and probably have only seen them on the tele. I can see it now, Honey look how cute and cuddly those rattlers are, while they sit on their couch in downtown LA. I guess Zironjohn has nothing left to say...

And you are right ... rattlesnakes are good eating if you like to eat rattlesnake. Rattlesnakes are eaten by many-many wildlife; birds of prey, animals, other reptiles ... why ... even other snakes eat rattlesnake. They are very-very good source of protein if/when you out and about in the woods ... need a meal, maybe you lost and hungry. Ya sure

Gamo makes a 22 convertible air rifle (pellet/shot shell) costs around $200 and the 22 shot shells are reloadable so get a hold of some #12 shot - at least as effective or more so than CCI,FEDERAL ,WIN 22 shot shells
https://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Gamo_...gun_Rifle/1020 Other would be used Crosman 1100 CO2 shotgun also can reload shells Last edited by SW1917; 06-15-2019 at 12:41 PM.. Reason: ? |
