I have a nickle plated plated colt 1911 combat commander that I wanted blued.
Colt says it cannot be done but they will refinish it to original for 300 bucks.

1911 re-done
Try Jack Huntington in Grass Valley (530-268-6877 ).I recently had my colt commander bobtailed,a beavertail installed and a new trigger. He is the REAL DEAL as far as gunsmiths go.I'm extremely happy with the work.

Check with Robar, they are the kings of finishes. Colt might be right though, once it's been nickel plated it can't be blued.
edit: I see that Robar has a price for stripping nickel plating, so it apparently can be done. Last edited by sigstroker; 02-17-2013 at 5:57 PM.. |

I've heard nothing but good things about Alchemy Custom if you don't mind shipping. You might consder contacting them to see what their backlog is like.
Springfield Armory Custom Shop is another great source but I'm not sure of their backlog either. I would recommend Dave Severns but hes not accepting new work at this time that I know of and his waits are 1 year plus when he is.

If you want to save on shipping, tell us your ballpark area for better local references.
As you are refinishing and rebarreling, I will assume the gun has no collector value. Are you happy with the sights, beaver tail / grip safety and trigger? Any sharp edges that cut the hands? If you might want upgrades in the future, you might consider doing them all at once. The fit and finish now would save time and money down the road. The list above hits on a lot of the shops that do fine 1911 work. I would add Dave's metalworks in So Cal to the list as well

Check with Dave's Metal Works in Covina,626-859-0299.He might be able to get the hard chrome stripped and the slide blued.Another option is Cerakote, which Dave offers. There is a Cerakote color called Midnight Blue which looks like a satin bluing job.

If you have the hard chrome stripped off you know it will lose value correct?
Why not buy another 1911 or sell yours and buy one like you want? I just think stripping a good finish off a gun to revert to bluing is a step in the wrong direction.

I agree using any of these guys. I know Alan Tanaka is good cuz he did my Colt giving it a nice trigger job. sights and hard chroming the entire pistol.
Will Ohara, Alan Tanaka, Jim Hoag, etc. Take your pick. Mail Clerk |

bluing iS a great way to get your gun ruined. My grandfathers Colt Match Pistol got some rust on it so he gave it to my father to be reblued. When we got it back there was not a level or straight line on it and all the screws were dished out.It was ruined due to bad polishing and when it was stolen 5 years later i didn't care a bit about it.

Seemed like the other members answered your question,
my two cents, i'd just keep it the way it is, or just polish with barrel change.
