Default List my HD pistol on my CCW permit, or not?

I am finalizing my CCW process as we speak, and trying to decide which three handguns I am going to have listed on my permit.

Maybe a stupid question here, but I'm sure I've asked stupider ones in my life before, and this won't be the last time, either...

Should I put the handgun I reserve for home-defense on my CCW list of three guns, or not?

If I *don't,* I can put three others on my list and still keep that one as a HD-only...

If I *do* list it on the permit, then I only have two others to add to the list...but, the upside is that I could legally carry that HD gun on my person if I wanted to anywhere on/off our property without worrying about violating any laws.

What might you do (or, what *do* you do)? Thanks!

Well... if you want to carry your HD gun then do it, but if not, I don't see any point in doing so.

This is more of a question you should ask yourself than us.

I use all my firearms on my CCW as HD.

My main CCW is my HD gun. Comes off at night and goes on the nightstand.

If your night stand gun is full size handgun then probably not if you carry single stack subcompact for ccw.

Completely depends on what your HD gun is and how well you can carry it. If it is a full-size 1911 with weapon light and laser, it's probably not a good choice for concealment.

Regardless of your decision, you will still only get three guns on your permit. With that, you must consider what your carry needs are. In Sacramento, we get varying climates, which change what you wear and what you can conceal. That should be a greater concern in your choices.

Is the home defense gun something you shoot well? Is it tricked out, custom trigger, aftermarket laser, etc.

How many guns do you feel that with 4 seconds from start to finish, and perhaps already cut, wounded do feel comfortable betting your life on?

My primary HD pistol is stock except for the sights. If I had to shoot in close quarters, or longer distances it's the gun I feel most comfortable with. I shoot IDPA and Steel matches with it as well. It's my go to carry gun. So yes, in my case my HD a full size M&P is #1. My #2 gun is same gun only in .45ACP. Again very comfortable to shoot.

One advantage to having a full size gun on your permit is that you can have it in your car (glove box, console, etc) for long trips. Or all the guns on your permit can be in your range bag in the back seat.

But if you can only have 3 and you have 3 you actually want to carry then don't add you HD gun.

I used to have 5 on my permit but only ever carried 2 so I'm renewing tomorrow with only those 2.

So it's more a matter of preference than any real practical reason.

If you have more than 3 handguns and do not anticipate taking the HD gun with you ever then NO.
If you have less than 4 handguns then sure, put all on permit.

If you don't have to leave off a better CCW gun to add it yes. As pointed out already it makes transport of the HD gun easier to the range and such.

^^^Wisdom right here; that's the "aha" I've been missing in my decision-making process. Thanks!

If you have 3 other concealable, comfortable weapons which you can put on the permit then leave the HD gun at home. If you only have 3 pistols then be all means add it to the permit. My HD weapon is my Linberta 12 gauge. I won't be putting that on my permit.

This kind of logic makes perfect sense, and I appreciate you sharing it. The answer is "yes," I do...and so I have decided to keep my HD gun exclusively as that, and to add the other three to the permit.

Thanks everyone for your input!

Default If there wasn't a limit I would add my HD as well...

This is the only reason I would put my HD on you CCW.

We are limited to 3 guns in our county, so I chose my most concealable guns.

If there wasn't a limit I would add my HD as well...
