Default Doomsday: Solar Storm (new History documentary)

Full episode available on History Channel website

I've heard about the Carrington event before, but had no idea just how powerful that was. Apparently if one were to happen today, the entire world's electrical grid could be shut down... permanently.

I kinda assumed it would be a big hassle but they will fix the grid eventually, like in a couple weeks to a few months. But no, according to the experts in the documentary, they will never be able to get it back up... ever. And about 90% of the world's population will die.

I think 90% dead due to power grid down, is a stretch (even when you include the smartphone addicts)
Before the discovery of electricity, people survived - And although it will take some doing, we can survive again.

Farms (old style with horse/oxen) machines will make a comeback
homes will take longer to build (but at least they will be solid again.
Corporations - Facebook/google/yahoo will fold and those tech workers will need to join the farm class.

The list goes on, and I do not think it would be an entirely bad thing- just a LOT of elbow grease.

If American power grid goes down the Amish will rule like never before.
We'll probably have go tell them because they'll have no clue anything happened. What?
Same old same old.

Construction? yep

Transport? yep

Farming? yep

Pretty women?

I don't think the 90% number is that exaggerated. That would leave 700 million people.

The horse and oxen will be eaten by hungry people from the cities. There will be plenty of dwellings since a lot of people will die....

It's not just about being unable to turn on your light switch. Everything depends on electricity including oil extraction and refining. Which means that in a short amount of time food production and large scale food transport will stop.

The cities only have about 2-3 days of food before the scramble for food begins. All food distribution centers are now heavily computerized, and without those computers timely distribution will quickly cease. All shipping will cease within a few days. And food warehouses will become targets.

Like wise water distribution is dependent on pumps and so are sewer systems.

EBT (welfare) cards will no longer work and cash will not be accessible. Panic will erupt in the Cities and gangs will rise up to fill the vacuum left behind by the abdication of ROL because LE will abandon their posts to care for their own families. The gangs will ruthlessly raid food warehouses, sources of energy, and emergency water.

People will be trapped in the cities or on the road running out of fuel in a desperate attempt to find food in the country. The roads will quickly become impassable by auto or truck. The military and national guard will have to triage cities, picking the ones they can save and defend while letting others descend into chaos.

The federal gov. will attempt to restart farming operations and infrastructure, but will only be able to produce enough food to ensure small populations can survive. They will likewise attempt to restart refineries and restore small portions of infrastructure to support continuity of government only to run into armed opposition from a starving populace who attempt to take whatever resources the government is using to sustain itself.

Gangs (marauders) will fight each other for precious resources. While people in the country are forced to kill marauders and innocents alike at first sight to defend their crops and livestock to feed their communities.

The cities will become unlivable due to a lack of food, water, fuel, sanitation, and sewer. Disease will run rampant, medicine will not be produced, and medical help will disappear.

More people will die from sickness and lack of water/food, but many will be killed by their fellow humans. For the elderly and infirm it will be a horrible death sentence. Women and children will be decimated. Cannibalism will become common.

Industry will die, along with much of the expertise necessary to rebuild it. Raw materials will not be available as large scale mining will stop without energy and oil refining capacity.

It seems likely that small wars will break out over resources and left over equipment that can be repurposed.

The quaint romantic picture of all of us working together to rebuilds our country like the Amish is a fantasy should something like the described event occur. Instead, there will be a desperate life or death struggle just to stay alive. And when its over there will be many fewer people. And we will revert back to much shorter life spans and hard lives.

The Amish don't believe in guns or fighting. Unfortunately, they will be destroyed in short order.

That's too bad, the Amish would be the best people in the world for thriving in a post-apocalyptic world.

Hmm maybe we should form an elite security squad and contract out security services to the Amish. Like, if SHTF, we come and provide armed security for you, and you provide us with food and water.

Hummm wipe out our power grid for a bit, not a bad idea, it would totally knock some sense into our teenagers, it would shut down the cell sites and all that texting would go away, they would actually have to directly talk to their friends, at least the ones within walking distance.

And telling them that they are now camping out for a few months (or more) would send them over the edge.

Depends on the size of the CME event. Most live circuits in the exposed hemisphere will fry, but not all.

If you search on the Selco Bosnia story, you will see that Scott's scenario below is very possible. We just don't know where and to what degree.

It's clear to me, that in a major event, mobilization of Fire, Police and Military is going to be problematic, when those trained to go into harms way, also have family at home with no power, and no water.

I go to spaceweather.com

We get bombarded by CME's all the time. One is expected to hit tomorrow. They make great auroras.

I don't think the number is that exaggerated. . For all the people that live in places with extreme cold and extreme heat . Yes people used to live in these places before. But think about how many people die durning an extreme cold or heat spell now with electricity and gas. To many people live on some sort of electricity supplied or cooled medication . Elderly ,sick and the weak would die when no one was there to help or protect them . Police ,fire and medical. Hell my neighbor has the fire dept over 2 times a week easy to pick her or her disabled kid up from falling on the ground or can't get out of the shower .

90% seems fair and Scott's scenario works.

If the nuke plants go meltdown or someone drops 600 nukes on us in a day the 90% could be wishful thinking. Underground would probably be the only place one could survive the massive fallout.

Being near hydro-electrical dams or geothermal would get you access probably faster than most with the big plus of WATER. Animals like water too, Food....

The ocean seems viable to hide out also.

That type of event is defensible if our government had their priorities straight.

Instead they spent trillions on nothing tangible leaving our infrastructure outdated and vulnerable.

It would ugly to live after such an event. We're 100% dependent on outside food and water.

I hope I can still get into my garage after the power goes out because that's where I keep my shovel!
