Default The joys of being a home based FFL

We sell to almost the entire Rancho Sheriff department so it is not uncommon that we have police cars and officers in uniform coming and going at all odd hours.

This is a funny conversation between a customer who came to DROS and thought that maybe we were being raided lol.

Maybe they were coming to investigate the packing peanuts you were sent.

Wife went for a ride along one time so they came by to pick her up at like 9pm and customer shows up and sees Sandra getting in the back. That sure caused a whole lot of questions lol

You should have told the customer the Police were there because the prior customer forgot their FSC card....

I got strange looks from neighbors as well with marked police vehicles visiting. One time it was nice that the vehicles looked the same so that they did not know that it was one vehicle after another instead of just one for a longer period of time.

Equally funny for the residence check for your CCW.

A guy up the street worked on a drag car sponsored by our PD. They would bring it by on a trailer behind their marked SUV. They'd roll it off the trailer give it a tune up and a couple quick burn outs - nobody ever called the cops to complain.

It is always a concern. One person tried that with me, but changed his tune when he heard a noise behind him and when he turned to look what caused the noise he saw that it was a Sheriff Deputy. He suddenly decided he had some other place to be and was not a problem after that.

A bigger concern for me would be burglary when you are away on a vacation. Personal threat... ya, that's a good way to get a few extra bodily orifices.

But burglary... it's enough of a risk in a commercial location, but commercial buildings are generally not that difficult to secure being cinderblock/brick, limited glass area with security screens, etc... Most vulnerable area is generally the roof.
But a home is not designed to be that secure, and is much more difficult to secure without making it a prison. You end up being forced to rely more on your security system.

There tends to be more people around homes at all times of the day. Commercial tends to be quiet in the middle of the night.

People would not know when someone is there and when they are gone, as well, they would not know if there are any firearms there, other than personal firearms.

A good safe, a good alarm, paying attention all help.

Ya, I also forget that most home based FFLs don't exactly advertise their location (even though it is listed with the BATFE/DOJ).
The casual burglar isn't going to know exactly where you are unless he has been a customer.

Very much of a concern. We had security doors installed on all doors and large windows. All
Other Windows have 3M security film.

Also have 18 4K cameras watching every inch of property. We also love in gate community. Our alarm system is monitored 24/7 and wired into home battery backup system along with cameras.

Plus like i said we sell our local police. One time while on vacation a sensor went bad and within 3 minutes of alarm going off I had Rancho deputies at the house sweeping lol. They saw the alarm code on the system and knew the address, went light and siren with backup.

The locals police buy from me. They know not to go into my house for their own safety.

My neighbors know I sell guns and watch out for me. I watch out for them too and have keys to a few of the houses since they are snowbirds and I take care of their property. My wife takes them and picks them up from the airport twice a year and we call them if we have concerns.

When I am gone for more than a few hours i have someone come over and guard my house. If I am gone for a few days I move my stuff to a 24hr armed guard facility.

I also have a network of home based FFLs I work with so if one of us is having issues we all take turns on security detail. Back in 2011 a friend was threatened that his house was going to be shot up. We had rotations of guys on each corner in cars, a guy outside, and 2 guys inside for almost a week 24 hrs. I was sleeping on his couch with body armor on and a machine gun next to me. Nothing happened other than the guy came by and we followed him to the local gas station and told him to stay away from the neighborhood. He never came around since.

The local police pass by on occasion and call me to let me know when they see an unfamiliar car. I've had to update them on new cleaning ladies next door and new roomates at a house to the left of me. I guess that might be why my area for 2 blocks around has had zero criminal activity for about 5 years now.

Your lucky your PD responds to all alarm calls. Ours only have to respond to "verified alarms":
