Life after Appleseed?
Alright the title is a little misleading; I love Appleseed and am planning on attending at least two more events this year.
But, this past weekend I attended my third and requalified with my third different rifle. More importantly though, I'm extremely excited to say that my wife and nephew both earned their patches this weekend! I couldn't be more proud; they both have worked very hard since thier first event last year to hit this goal, and to nail it on the 239 anniversary? Icing on the cake. On the drive home, we scheduled ourselves for a KD in August and are talking about maybe hitting one more Appleseed between now and then. But that also got to talking about "what's next"? And for that I'd like your help. Is there an event that: 1) has you compete against yourself? Something we really love about Appleseed is that it is NOT a competition between shooters, but rather a competition against yourself. Its all about what you can do, not about what others are doing. 2) stresses a family friendly environment? Somewhere that doesn't frown upon kids participating (my nephew is 15) nor somewhere my wife will need to suffer the stares of over ego'd range heros? 3) hopefully continues to educate both in marksmanship and American history? 4) offers up new challenges that push our abilities? Basically, is there an Appleseed Level 2 type event out there? Thanks for your time guys.

Don't know if Appleseed format is or can be replicated. I know little of comp or training though.
What I really stopped in to say is congrats to you and your family bigj! It's indeed hard work to qualify. Gotta be gratifying though. Great job.

Rev 2.0 would be a full KD event out to 400 yards.
1. Light caliber (.223) 2. Scope and semi auto. 3. Iron sights on semi auto. 4. Scope and bolt action. 5. Iron sights on bolt action. Rev 3.0 1. Repeat 2-5 above with heavier caliber (308 Winchester). Rev 4.0 1. Repeat 1-4 above with surplus military rifles only. (1903 Springfield, M1 Garand, Mosin, etc.) Or go for the big challenge, share by becoming an instructor. Congratulations to all three of you on your accomplishments.

In all my firearm competitions I "compete against myself" and have taught my kids the same. Others might have better scores but I don't really concerning myself about their scores. I'm often joking about Bad Karma messing with my score
You'd better start reloading if you don't already. So the next step I'd suggest from my experience with my kids is: Bullseye competitions with revolvers in 22 or 38 (for them) and a different caliber for you Of course you'll need more guns and have to reload but you'll use less ammo at the "matches" Steel Silhouette rifle matches @ 200-500 meters, the M1 Garands, 1093's, Swedish Mausers and K31s give the kids a little "history" It's always great to see the 500m rams fall then hear the ding much later IDPA (run and gun with handguns - also revolvers) more history All of the competitions I've attended with my kids I've never seen mistreatment of anyone by others during the matches although they do treat my youngest boy with Envy in IDPA because he shoots so well and has become very fast Funny thing about competition, at the last IDPA State match that my youngest shot in, he had a cheering section of other squad members whom he had never met before. He was on his own that match - I was working the match

I compete with handguns and I've never worried too much about other people's scores. There's definitely a lot of fun matches you can do with your skills.
Doing at longer distance is definitely worthwhile. The one I did had been two years since the last Appleseed, and I switched from .22 to .223 so I spent the Saturday reviewing at 25 yards and requalifying, and then had no trouble Sunday at distance. It's been a year since then and if my schedule ever cooperates I'll do another one. If it's a regular distance shoot I'll bring a bolt action. If it's long distance I'll bring a Garand. If my schedule ever opens up I'd also like to do various rifle competitions or even instruct but given that right now I'm only managing to go every couple of years that seems unlikely. Since you're in San Jose you should look up the Zouaves - they're supposed to be a very friendly group. |

NRA High Power "Across the Course".
1. Technically, you're always shooting against yourself because you're always trying to better your average. It just so happens there's also other shooters competing in the match with you. 2. Open to all ages. CA has a state junior rifle team, too. 3. NRA/CMP High Power is all about marksmanship. 4. It's structured so you can level up in classification (High Master being the highest). There are various matches and tournaments including regular sanctioned/registered, regional, state, and national championships. There are also CMP LEG matches which are 50 shot National Match Courses of fire without sighters which you can also compete in if you want to get your Distinguished Rifleman badge.

Not an appleseed level 2 course.. but the NRA Winchester Qualification is somewhat similar.
The main difference is it is not run as a class (generally) as it is a self guided program. There are all sorts of different qualifications you can go thru in this program. Maybe Pistol would be of interest to you as you have done a lot of rifle... Heres the IE chapters thread on it with a lot of info about the program: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=835381 Here is the programs manual (pdf): http://training.nra.org/documents/pd...p/qualbook.pdf |

Hey BigJ,
I was at that Appleseed, congrats again! Your group was shooting DN's the whole time, very impressive! Send me a PM if you're in this area again and want to go shooting or hunting, I've got a pretty good spot you all would love. |

Hello BigJ,
For specific Appleseed 'what's next', each Appleseed benediction at the end of the weekend tries to answer for each participant. Do you remember the instructors saying the 7th step? 1. Telling others about Appleseed. A) the great marksmanship training and B) the equally important history/responsibility. 2. As you said: you have already EARNED your patch and have been to at least 2 Appleseeds, and are amped about the program: then Sir I strongly urge you to take up the Orange hat and join the volunteer crew in your area. As far as learning and challenging yourself on the next levels and improvements of your marksmanship; I can testify that having to learn and move up the levels of the Orange hat required mymarksmanship skills really improve beyond the minimum AQT match score requirements. You have to practice and know cold what you have to teach. Plus you get to help assure that Appleseed events continue to be the kid and gender friendly, ego busting, wonderful event that it tries to be each time and what you and others have found to be of great value and need. Cheers |
