Total cost for one adult is $40 + $15 Now what is Appleseed. Project Appleseed is an activity of The Revolutionary War Veterans Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to teaching every American our shared heritage and history as well as traditional rifle marksmanship skills. Our volunteer instructors travel across the country teaching those who attend about the difficult choices, the heroic actions, and the sacrifices that the Founders made on behalf of modern Americans, all of whom are their posterity. (from https://appleseedinfo.org/ ) Our rifle marksmanship program complements our history and heritage. We teach the traditional American marksmanship skills. Why teach marksmanship? Because good shooting requires learning positive traits such as patience, determination, focus, attention to detail, and persistence. (from https://appleseedinfo.org/ ) So that is the by the book answer :-) I think Appleseed is all of the above and one of the building blocks of our Sports Shooting Community here in California and across the Nation. We teach you how to use your rifle or we help you refresh the skill you already have. We talk about some of the most Intense Americans ever to walk our Soil. Do you know that an American was given the folk title of "Death on The Pale Horse"? :-) and It wasn't Clint So we teach you rifle marksmanship skills and heritage history

We go through all the skills in one day but it's a bit of a rush. To truly get the full benefit of the class, especially if you're set on shooting the Rifleman score, you should try the full weekend class. There's also more time for individual attention and specialized drills on the second day, not to mention additional stories at lunch.
However the one day class does cover ALL of the fundamentals. It is also cheaper, and many more people can or will commit to one day than a full weekend. The ammo requirements are easier in this benighted era of rimfire shortages (~200 rounds for one day, ~500 for a two-day class). Or with a one-day class you can just test it out before going for a full weekend later... So we give you the option.

Thanks for the info! Is there an expiration date on the Appleseed certificate that came with the Marlin 795 LTR? If not, I'm going to save it for the 2 day Appleseed at a later time. The 1 day Appleseed sounds like a good way to test the water.

No expiration date that I'm aware of.
Next two-day Appleseed at Burro Canyon is August 23-24. Sign ups are here: http://www.appleseedinfo.org/search-...ame=California

I'd love to do the one day but I don't currently own a rimfire. Centerfire is out of the question huh? I'll just wait if that's the case. I got another kid due in late August so I may have to wait longer still.

I jumped the gun -- this PARTICULAR Appleseed is Rimfire Only, because it's not at our usual range. Sorry for the confusion. Back in the day, Appleseed was mostly centerfire, but with ammo costs most of our students start with .22's before moving up. It's your choice.

I'm in! The website says registration begins at 8, so if I'm not there by 7:45 I'm late right? Depending on my ammo situation I'll be doing it with my standard M1A or my A2. Either way, I plan on enjoying the hell out of this day. I haven't had to qualify for anything in a LONG while. Hope I still got it.
I got bullets and a sling, soiled boonie cover, maybe dig up my isomat to use as a shooting mat. Other than a smile, what else should I bring? |

Corrections above -- sorry, things are moving fast this year and I'm not always keeping up. See PM's.

Your call. You may find the scope relaxing since it makes it easy to see the target, but then good irons are far less fussy.
Whatever sights you use should be solid and adjustable. We like Tech Sights or equivalent for irons, since click-adjustable irons are rare -- most factory irons leave much to be desired. Scopes however have gotten better, and there are many sub-$100 or even sub-$50 scopes that will get the job done (e.g., Simmons 22MAG, Bushnell Rimfire, etc.). My advice is to just bring your favorite rifle however it is configured. But if you're building up a new rifle, I'd say that if you have good eyesight, bring irons, otherwise scope it and get it over with. "Good Eyesight" means you can look through the sights, focus on the front sight clearly, and still make out a black 1" square at 25 meters (it will be fuzzy) in daylight. My own eyesight is marginal. Following the test above, I can see a fuzzy grey blur but nothing solid. I can however still shoot a Rifleman score with irons even though I do better with a scope.

Bottom line, if your eyes will handle it - irons - there's less to break and it's a useful skill to acquire. If your eyesight has gotten to the middle-age fade stage, or was never great to start with, do yourself a favor and get a scope - the Simmons 22MAG and Bushnell Rimfire mentioned above are just fine, I own both. Mount them as low as you can manage with your rifle, it'll make it easier to get a proper cheek weld. |

The last time I shot an appleseed with irons either I'd guess where stage 4 was correctly or I'd guess wrong and I'd get a nice little group right above each target. My score was basically in the 220s or 170s, depending. The next time I did it with a scope and it was much more consistent... but I also had a new prescription and could see the 1" squares better in general so maybe it would have been OK.

Been too long. I'll be there. I'm going to give my M&P15-22 a try so I'll have a scoped 795 and a tech sighted 795 up for loaners if anybody needs it. Also feel free to ping me if anybody needs to pony up some ammo.
As for scope or not, I think everybody should know how to use irons so it makes sense as a starting point, but both before when I had glasses and now that I did lasik, my effectiveness in being able to focus on a front sight and see a target at all goes way down as the day goes on.
