Shooting mat
If you attend an Appleseed you are going to spend a lot of time prone. This requires a shooting mat. Here is a great article from the CMP on building one with materials from WalMart.

I paid around $25 for mine at Midway. They go on 50% off sales periodically.
That being said when I'm doing something all day like an Appleseed event I also bring a big chunk of remainder carpet I got at Home Depot. Gives me more space / cushion / insulation against the cold ground. Then I put the shooting mat on top of that. |

That's a cool project and thanks for posting but shooting mats are so cheap ( like the one Midway always has on sale ) I don't see how useful it is
A chunk of carpet can often be acquired for nothing and it works pretty well. Quote:

After instructing for six years, I find I don't need a shooting mat anymore... but it does help keep the rifle clean.
In extremis, I recommend folks use the floor mats from their car. But Midway mats, camp mattresses, moving blankets, carpet remnants, old bath mats, or even a serious beach towel will do the job, in approximate order of utility. Try it out and see what works for you.
