Default San Jose 'KD' shoot, 3/29-30

We'll have three 'known distance' shoots out to 200 yards at the San Jose 'Metcalf' range this year, the first one the last weekend of March, the 29th and 30th. Last year, we 'started slow' on our 2-day KD program, doing the usual 'Sunday' marksmanship review. Not this year. We are going straight into ballistics, come-ups, and KD AQTs. (We tried out this format at one-day KD shoots last year. See this AAR for instance.)

A fast start means more time for interesting exercises. So on Saturday we will be featuring a 'customized battle sight zero' exercise, where you match the ballistics of your rifle and ammo against a fixed size target over various distances. See this article for a description of the process.

Our distance estimation fun shoot was popular last year, so this year we're taking it full scale. For the last hour of the shoot on Sunday, we'll tear down all the target frames and other distance markers, and set out targets and reference objects at various unknown distances. Shooters will team up with buddies to compute distance estimates (no lasers allowed) and spot for each other as they try to eliminate the targets. Distance estimate accuracy and round count will both play into scoring.

We're allowing up to 16 shooters - if we get that many, we will need to run two relays, but based on our experience with the one-day KD, we should get able to get in 2 rounds for everyone on Saturday, and probably 3 on Sunday. Priority is given the KD shooters, but if space allows we can let in 2 or 3 who just want to 'grind' on their 25m QDAQT scores. If you fall in the latter category, PM me and I'll let you know if there will be space. Note this shoot is for Appleseed 'veterans' only.

The info page for the San Jose sheet is here and the registration page is here. If you're coming, please get a 100 yd zero on your centerfire, or 25m on your rimfire (or both), and get in a little practice in advance, so we can start fast and low drag on Saturday. You will also get some further pre-shoot instructions via e-mail as the date draws near.

Still plenty of room at this one. Looks like there will be rain on Saturday, but we shoot from under a canopy, so no worries.
