17235.
As used in this part, “switchblade knife” means a knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife, or any other similar type knife, the blade or blades of which are two or more inches in length and which can be released automatically by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other mechanical device, or is released by the weight of the blade or by any type of mechanism whatsoever. “Switchblade knife” does not include a knife that opens with one hand utilizing thumb pressure applied solely to the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to the blade, provided that the knife has a detent or other mechanism that provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade, or that biases the blade back toward its closed position.
(Added by Stats. 2010, Ch. 711, Sec. 6. (SB 1080) Effective January 1, 2011. Operative January 1, 2012, by Sec. 10 of Ch. 711

If I understand the code correctly, butterfly knives fall under switchblade law in CA.

It’s the flipping part that covers butterfly.

I think it is illegal to offer for sale if the blade is over 2”

See that's what I thought... but I see them for sale in stores and I thought if you kept them in your truck and only at home they were legal to have. For example the people that collect switchblades, I thought in a legal manner.

Yes, butterfly knives fall under it but it’s the “gravity knife” part that covers them in the code.

So... I’m in east side San Jose and they have a coin pusher by the front door of a shop

All sorts of fun things happen in this state... many are probably not legal.

So yes- places sell butterfly knives and switch blades. Once you have them, you can’t legally sell them in CA

You are allowed to own them. Just not carry them. The law is stupid.

If you wanted to sell it just sell to someone out of state on an auction site, or better yet Blade Forums with a Gold membership so you can sell and PM... and no one takes 13%.

Facebook had a balisong sale group that is pretty active

The last two are the most active.

Nor can you offer them for sale.

(a) Possesses the knife in the passenger's or driver's area of any motor vehicle in any public place or place open to the public.

(b) Carries the knife upon the person.

(c) Sells, offers for sale, exposes for sale, loans, transfers, or gives the knife to any other person.
But you can buy them out of state.
