Default so I just bought a small camping trailer

ok, I just bought a 19foot camping trailer ! where am I going to take it camping ?

I am not one to go camping at big RV parks where your next door neighbor is even closer than your neighbor at home. I prefer more out of the way place and would not mind being alone (that likely wont happen). Not interested in beach camping like Refugio, etc. We are in Santa Barbara.

My wife and I's history is that we used to take my LandCruiser and go camping up in the mountains nearby, we liked Mono back in the 80's and 90's when it had water flowing over the dam, have not been there in 20+ years. I assume its a no-go due to the road and the camper. Been going out to Mojave and Gorman last few years, doing tent camping, I don't care if the place has hookups or not. We will go to Cachuma this weekend for the shakedown camping, its a brand new trailer and things will go wrong so I don't want to be far from home.

My truck is a 4x4 so can go most places but I can't go on too rough roads with the trailer. I remember the road to hole-in-the-wall in the middle of nowwhere was not too rough, might try that one next. I love the desert, 100+ degree temps is yard working weather to me (with plenty of water) but my wife prefers the woods, so need suggestions.

Anything near Yosemite ?

And last question, what is near Laguna Seca race track in Monterey ? going up to twice this year to races but campsites are already booked for the both events I am interested in, so anywhere near there that we could camp, unhook the truck and go to the races for the day, come back to campsite after ? Normally to save money we stay in a hotel in King City and drive the hour each way all 3 days, that is getting old but the historics weekend hotels in Monterey are $500/night so it is worth it.

You can take that trailer about anyplace your truck can go. I used to tow a tent trailer all over the place in the Sierra's. National forest area around Yosemite is pretty open. I've taken my motor home deep in the forest on logging roads to camp. I haven't camped around Monterey but there is the Laguna seca recreational area campground.

I would suggest you get the Allstays camp and rv app. It is the only app I have ever paid for and at $9.99 it is worth it. It will show you all camp areas including BLM areas and is updated frequently.

I am looking at that app now thank you

For Laguna Seca they are sold out for the 2 events I am going to. Maybe one more year of hotels and better planning next year

Try Arroyo Seco Campground west of Greenfield. From there you can take Carmel Valley Road to Laurels Grade to access Laguna Seca.

Another option is Yanks RV Resort in Greenfield.

I doubt you will find anything closer that isn't already booked.

What size receiver hitch is on your 19 footer? I'm needing a rig for work in Idaho, but my S10 only has a 2" ball, which is about max for it's towable weight. PAX

I raised my popup 6" and ditched the 13" tires and put 14" wheels on. It's pretty easy to do

Most new trailers have gone to the 2 5/16 ball - our 20 is 3300 empty and up to 5500 full. If the weight matches just change the ball. You'll probably need to add a weight dist hitch to make the max weight. I use one when towing with our Flex but not with our Excursion.

North on the coast or further up 101 - Prunedale I think it was called the advantage is coming into the track from the west rather than the traffic jam at the south. We gave up on the historics many years ago (too crowded too many gold chain wannabes and lately far too expensive) we went from #2-20 and had a room in Carmel. The lady couldn't believe it when we told her to go ahead and rent "our" room. She even called a month before to see if we really wanted to give it up. We went one time later when a friend was driving a 427 Cobra for a guy but stayed in Gilroy.

Thank You for all the suggestions...one more question has now popped up. If I stay at a bad park like the one you guys mention above, how safe is it to leave the trailer during the day when I take my truck and go play during the day ? There will be firearms in the trailer, should I take them with me and leave them in the truck where ever I go ? I initially thought the trailer would be safer but now with the comments on some of the parks, maybe not a good idea.

For my 2 events at Laguna Seca this year, we won't be taking the trailer unfortunately as the ones near Monterey are booked. We will stay in our normal hotel an hour away and drive daily.

To the poster that mentioned the historics, I have never missed one, I was there at the first one in 1974 and I very much agree they have gone down in quality and are now too rich for my blood. We used to stay in Monterey and got priced out of that many years ago. I took my Singer (1934 Singer Le Mans) a few times but even the racing is not what it was back in the late 70's and 80's. I still enjoy walking the paddocks though

for yosemite, look around bass lake, oakhurst, fish camp, mariposa, and ahwahnee.

on monterey, if you book WAY ahead, you can sometimes avoid the "event premium". we have stayed at the mariposa inn & suites for moto gp, but we pretty much guessed at when the event would be, and made the reservation in december for the event in july...got it at regular summer rates.

I'm a Rootes Groupie since '69, Tigers (3), Alpines (2), and Husky's (3). I've never been to the historics. PAX

I picked up a 22 foot Fleetwood Prowler single axle in Reno last week. Apparently it's the largest you can pull with a 2" ball. 1975 lbs. dry, 150 tongue, 4.3 S10 should be OK. Headed for southern Idaho the 11th for TDA. PAX

Wow, that's huge for a SRW pickup!

Did you have to get a CDL?
