I can guarantee you after having one in the middle of August, you won't be shooting any time soon afterward. Then again, you could be like the 90yr. old woman patient my daughter had at the convalescent home who had both done at the same time and was walking around like no big deal by two weeks.

When I say "be like," I don't mean the woman part.

Went there yesterday 01-01-14 at around 0730. Drove in farther to get a good spot. People started rolling in around 0900-0930.

One guy parked his truck on the makeshift "road" behind us and setup a target at our 7-8 o'clock position around 50 yards away. My brother walked over and had a talk with him and explained that it wasn't safe because in essence he was shooting from behind although not directly. He said he wouldn't sweep us and he was only shooting .22's..... smh

Around 1000 another truck came in and setup where they guys target was but he had already packed up. These guys setup their targets at our 9 o'clock position immediately to our left 50 yards away so they were still behind the firing line. We watched them for a little bit, shot a little more, packed up and left after my brother saw a ricochet kick up dirt 20 yards away.

It's amazing how people don't understand the concept of a firing line. I've been to hodge in the past and here most recently and I've never had this issue. People come and line up their firing line along with everyone else's. Cease fire when someone is walking out as a courtesy even when they're far away. Disappointing but I guess it can't always be sunshine, rainbows, and Care Bears.

Yes, I know a lot of people shoot there, especially those whose vehicles won't make it up the hill, but per them, it is still illegal. Just a fyi.
From the BLM site:

Quote:
Where may I not shoot while on BLM lands?

Do not shoot from or on a public road or highway, or from a motor vehicle. Do not shoot in the direction of any road, hiking trail or parking area. Do not shoot across a road, trail, or wash.

Shooting is prohibited: within one mile of all campgrounds and developed recreation sites; within 150 yards (300 yards within Riverside County) of any man-made structure, home, barn, outbuilding, motor home, camper, or any inhabited area;or within 100 yards of any roadway. Since it is prohibited to drive that far off existing roads, you must be prepared to safely hike to your chosen shooting location.
Still, that area is well within 100 yds of the road. That last sentence is also interesting, never considered that bit.....

There's actually a shooting clinic that uses that area, I recall seeing them by the front over the past few years. Them and plenty of other people. I've chatted to them before, nice guys, would hate to see them get a ticket. Maybe they know the rangers. They are also the least of the rangers concern considering some of the imbeciles that show up there.

Miuk, tannerite is nothing new out there. If you have it in yourself, please educate the shooters next time you see people use it and that they could find themselves in a hell of a lot of trouble.

Heading out the door in a couple minutes to spend a few hours at the 'Peak, sunrise is just starting break.

Hopefully it won't be too crowded today. In and out early.

Had a great time. I drove way back to the other side of the hill, not quite so crowded back there and didn't have to share my spot, so no worries about the firing line "moving".

The place is pretty trashed right now, a clean up is definitely in order. This is how my spot looked when I arrived........

Brought out an assortment of goodies to have fun with, G21 not pictured 'cause it was holstered the whole time.....

I was out there from about 7:30 until about noon. Saw quite a few trucks drive by to find spots to shoot. Oddly enough, didn't see any of the ones who left hauling out any garbage, and all the shooting spots had plenty of trash.

This is how my spot looked when I left.....

Each time I went out to check/change my target I brought some trash back to the truck, it really didn't take that much effort. Pretty sad really, when you consider that I'm old, fat, out of shape, and basically disabled.

My haul on the way out.....

Nice job cleaning and setting a good example.

I'm just following the example that others here have set long before me.

I'm all for helping out at the next clean up. I sure don't want to lose the privilege of having a place like SP because of trash.

I thought that was you Desert. On our way out I told my dad who had never been out to SP that any time you saw someone cleaning up more crap than they brought, they had to be a calgunner. We drove past you picking up the wood and I said "See, prime example!"

We rolled down the window and waved but you turned around right as we did.

All my spot had was some glass, clay and a s-ton of shotgun hulls I raked up and bagged. We were shooting steel.

I was in a grey f250.

Will definitely stop and say hello now that I know your truck.

E.D., I've got a family get together planned for that Saturday, but you can rest assured that my next visit to Bee Canyon will include clearing my "spot" by putting as much trash as I can fit in my truck.

Hopefully the date won't fall towards the end of March, my anniversary is on 3/27, and though we don't have concrete plans right now, the wife and I always take off for the weekend closest to our date.

Definitely looking forward to making the clean-up though!

You can take that trash to the ranger station dumpsters 1/2 mile west of where you hit pavement.

Thank You!!

Yup, E. D. pm'd me with the same info. But that is specific to Bee Canyon, right?

Are there any dumpsters available to us near SP? I've still got that load of garbage in my truck and was going to break it down and fit as much as I can in my herby-curbys for trash pick up day. I only use the truck for range days or hauling dirt bikes, rest of the time it stays parked anyway.

My trucks appetite for gas already drains my wallet, don't want to pay the dump entry fee if I can help it.

We went in today with 3 contractor bags for our clean up and still had to leave trash. We took 2 bags of nothing but shotgun hulls 2 5 gal buckets of brass and a bagfull of target trash. While we shot some hipster looking guys in a 4x4 tore through shot 200 rounds of 12ga and then left all their trash next to us! At least a few passing people helped take our extra trash bags so we managed to take most of the wood and scrap in our SUV.
When is that cleanup?

I've seen that people recommend 4X4. Is it accessible for a regular car? Have not shot there yet, but sounds like a cool place and id love to help keep it alive and clean.

4x4 isn't necessary, but a high clearance vehicle, such as a pickup-truck or SUV is preferable.

I saw a Hyundai eleantra get most of the way back. You just have to drive very carefully and all. I would still bring a 4x4 but that's me.

If I attend the clean up on the 29th of March, I might as well move Fido out of the dog house now. For the long term!

Sorry, but I'm afraid I won't be able to make this one, but rest assured that I do my part anytime I go shooting.

What time is the event happening?? I might be able to show up later in the morning. I have a class that day, I believe. Will the time and the like be displayed here? Also is there going to be any shooting that day? Or is it just a clean up day??

Click on the link a couple of posts up and it will take you to the "official" Steele Peak thread. The date and time are posted there.

Is there anywhere out at Steele Peak where you can shoot longer range? Say over 200 yards?
