Ok then
But it would have been really cool to see a captured-recaptured spike bayo turn up in a crate in California.

Spiggy is correct, it is not a Finnish bayonet, just a funkily colored one.

Here is a pic of that bayonet next to a regular bayonet

https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D35533_8_7609327255

I kept the purple one for myself, though it is now stuck on my '37 Tula and I can't get it off. I am a little miffed about that...

Thanks for the pic That color is actually rather like the plum color often found on our post war reworks.

Good luck in dislocating it, our just leave it. Think of it as a match made in Mosin heaven...

As for selling these, how does it look in your bound book that you purchased 40 long guns but kept only 4 of them. I was wanting to do a purchase of 5 Mosins from JG and keep the best of the bunch and off load the rest to friends, but I thought it would look like I am dealing, not collecting.

Perfectly within the constraints of purchasing/disposing for the purposes of expanding your collection. The more you get, the better chance there is to find rare ones for your collection.

Oh yeah, because that would make sense... DOH!

My bayonet is stuck without being turned though, that is the issue. I may have to heat this sucker up to get it off.

Nothing exciting, I checked all the rifles for all the usual stuff and found nothing.

Of note, however, is the fact that a lot of Izhevsk rifles had Tula-marked bolts and small Tula stars on the barrels. In addition, lots of Tula rifles had Izhevsk-marked bolts.

Looking closely at a bolt from a friend's rifle, I found a pre-1928 Izhevsk mark. This is quite odd, since this particular rifle was all parts matching but a rifle made in the late 1930s/early 1940s.

I also found one Izhevsk rifle with the Tula Hammer on it.

Other than these little curiosities, there wasn't anything really exciting.

I did not. Since they are all round receivers and mostly with rough machining I figured they didn't have any funky stuff on them.

Mosin bayonets are really sticky. I have a fun story about a time when one of our guys lifted his mosin (bayonet affixed) in triumph. The bayonet went through the ceiling. When he let go, it was stuck there, seemingly frozen in time. We left for lunch. When we got back, it was still there... 3 days later

Also have another fun story regarding a M44 and a leather couch. The couch never survived

One of the '44 Izzy's that I picked up is an all parts matching but has the Tula star on the bolt body, with the Izzy arrow in triangle on the cocking piece...

Big thanks to Nate for taking this on, it was quite the treat to walk in and see 20 or so rifles to take a pick from!

Dont underestimate those izzy's you guys. I have a 1943 Izzy m91/30 that can take off a zombies head with iron sights @ 300 yards. Let my remind you that the 1943 Izzy M91/30 was the most produced, least collectible, and "worst" year to get this rifle. My other C&R buddies who own everything from enfields to garands dont understand why my $99 dollar rifle is more accurate than theirs.

PS. that Bulgy 148gr lightball is amazing ammo!

Nothing whatsoever wrong with the Izzy's. I own a few Izzy rifles and carbines myself. For some reason I'm just drawn to the Tula's. Kind of a blondes vs. brunettes argument. One just speaks to you more than the other.

I don't know what's up with those bayonets. The rifles were carefully refurbed to make them ready for action right out of the box yet most of the bayos are too tight. If I were you I would put a few drops of oil or even a squirt of WD on it and let it stand upside down for awhile. I bet it comes right off. All the bayos I've had needed to be opened up a little before they would go on and off. I figured it was just my own bad luck.

I know!

I finally got the bayonet off by using a piece of wood against the edge of the bayonet and then smacking the wood with a hammer. It slid right off.

That plum bayonet is too cool so I think I will open it up just a bit

Here is a somewhat crappy photo of the rifles I selected for myself. Top rifle is a 1939 Tula and the bottom rifle is a 1939 Izhevsk.

Enjoy!

Are all 91/30's supposed to have tang dates on them? The '42 Izzy I picked up with the orange painted markings doesnt appear to have any sort of stamping on the tang, no date, no arsenal...nada.

They should! You have to remove the stock to see the dates though. For the war time receivers it may be a little faint due to the rough machining and whatnot.

From 7.62x54r.net:

Q. Why is the tang of my rifle not marked?

A. Receivers from 1891 until 1893 or 1894 were not marked on the tang, while Remington and New England Westinghouse did not date any receivers. They sometimes, but not always, placed arsenal marks on the bottom, sides or top of the tang. Some Soviet tang marks are stamped so lightly that they are barely visible while others are not dated, or not fully dated, for unknown reasons.
