They will work better than any other 20.00 type and better than most 50.00 to 100 type. Better antennas can help extend range.

Just waiting for the its illegal to use these nazi's to join the convo

I'm surprised they haven't joined yet. We use these all the time out in the desert to communicate between cars.

It's an FM radio so it's line of sight. Elevation and antennas help a bunch.

I bought a couple since they are so cheap. I also bought their more expensive version around $60 just to compare.

These are easy to program using Chirp (which is free) and a really great value. Everyone should have a few charged up and ready to go for the inevitable.

Thank you for posting this. The one I purchased arrived before the NorCal power blackouts/ Kincade fire evac situation.

It proved to be useful as my cellphone/internet was down. I programmed a few local scanner channels into it.

Just finished up updating my programmed channels this evening. Dad and brother finally jumped on and grabbed them a set.

Baofeng has discontinued the original UV5R several years ago, so these are all knockoffs. Just like Baofeng never made a UV9R.

Also, throw away the CD that comes with it...it may contain Chinese viruses. Always use the CHIRP software to program.

Amazon was selling UV5R a couple of months ago. Sold by Amazon, not a 3rd party. I’d be surprised if they were selling knock offs. I bought a few @ $24

Elevation and length of antenna make all the difference. 200 Watts and a 20 foot antenna are just about useless at the bottom of a canyon. A 5 Watt handi-talkie on top of a ridge will very often get you a signal. That's why I don't use dash mount radios any more. Once you get a handi-talkie program in all the local repeaters. That's essential to reach anyone.

Does anyone that has received this particular one from this ebay seller know if this is the original UV-5R or if its the UV-5R V2?

I was going off by what another calgunner told me. If this is incorrect, let me do my due diligence and verify this.

Here is the Baofeng link I used to purchase my radios in 2014 and they no longer list the UV5R.
https://smile.amazon.com/stores/page...eb_20635463011

And please post your Amazon link. Ty.

The UV5R is still listed on Amazon. Why do people keep claiming otherwise?

Sold by VITAHUI and Fulfilled by Amazon.
It is a 3rd party item.
