Default 308 Ammo Accuracy

I don't reload, and wanted to get everyone's opinion on some factory ammo. I'm shooting it out of a M&P 10 with 18 inch barrel with 1:10 5r

Looking for both good quality plinking ammo, as well as good sub moa ammo. I'm not shooting past about 500 yards, with most shooting under 200.

Stuff that i've tried so far that's been consistently sub moa (as long as i don't screw it up):
Privi 168gr match
FGMM 168gr
Freedom Munitions 168gr match

Stuff i've tried that is good ammo but not consistently sub moa (closer to about 2-3moa):
Fiocchi 150gr
Privi 145gr

Curious about anything else you guys have tried?
PMC
Freedom Munitions 147/150/155gr
Federal Lake City M80
Any other federal stuff
Winchester
Remington
Armscor
Norma
Wolf
Herters steel/brass
Brown/Silver Bear
Anything else?

Look for something with a Sierra match king bullet in 175 gr. SMKBTHP

Lutz's book has all the coefficient tables.

175 is a 1k load. 168 is generally a better 600 and below round being generally more consistent.

OP the FGMM is probably about as good as it gets. Those sometime out shoot some people's hand loads and some loaders look to replicate their loads. I'd just stick with that.

Alot comes from rifle and shooter. FGMM is about as good as it gets without spending big bucks. If thats not working it more than likely the first 2 i mentioned. My precision build shoots sub moa with prvi 145 out to 200. And my handloads even better. Like last poster said, fgmm is about as good as it gets

PMC Bronze (147gr I believe) is definitely >1 MOA ammo-at least with me behind the trigger.

I've had good results (sub-moa) with Hornady A-max Match 168gr.

Still haven't tried out FGMM with my R700 yet.

For a buck a round I get what I get out of my rifle. I don't have the luxury of a fine bolt gun so I expect less from my M1A. However, if I spend 2 bucks a round for FGMM what I get is groups cut fairly in half. It's pretty impressive.

I'm always concerned more with what's going to feed reliably so there's a lot out there I won't even try. Some ammo I have had excellent results with have been South African, IMI, and the exceedingly rare AE 168 OTM. All very consistent and cost effective factory loads.

My plinking 308 ammo is my hunting ammo. I use Federal Fusion and it is <1 moa. This is out of a R700.

Here's a good watch to help further explain the 168/175/155 performance as mentioned in my post.

Just to clarify. The federal gold metal match is awesome and I love it. At almost $2 a round...very expensive to shoot

So I'm wondering about cheaper alternatives. I've had good luck with the privi 168 and also the freedom munitions 168. Both of these are around $1 a round when i can find it. Wanted to see what very one else has tried.

Also, wanted to see what people have been using to plink. Just ring some steel or knock over some tin cans out to 200 yards. Try to keep it under 3moa. I know I've seen steel case and some cheaper brass around 50 cents a round. Some of it is off brand stuff, but was wondering what people have tried and liked?

Since its hard to find ammo locally the only way is online and its hard to buy low quantities just to test without getting killed on shipping so I thought we could do some info sharing that would help everyone out.

I've always had great results with hornady 168 BTHP and a-max match through my rem 700. Sub MOA at 100 and hitting the 600yd plate at angeles shooting range.

Plinking under 600 yards I just use what ever I can find cheapest that's brass. Usually ends up being Winchester white box 145 FMJ stuff. Does me fine out to 500 yards around 2 maybe 2 1/2 MOA. After 600 it's like a paper plan and goes wild.

Have a look at http://www.southwestammunition.com/. Very accurate and very consistent. The stock comes and goes and there's time when you have to wait for your order (sometimes several weeks), but they've hired some new people and I think things have become faster.

I've shot their 175 SMK in a Magpul class with my SR-25 (a little faster twist than yours) and it was fantastic. At least half the class was shooting the same stuff and everyone was very happy with it (for those of us shooting .308).

Myself and a few others have had some good results with the 168gr Atomic Ammunition rounds. Last San Diego meet up Manpants got consistent sub-moa groupings with it.

Midway has them.

I know you dont want to reload, or havent started, but its the only way to pay less than a dollar a round and duplicate the match loads you have talked about. Reusing lake city brass and sierra 168s my cost per round is about .45cents. Thats buying at current prices. 175s would be a few cents more.
There is no free lunch.
Pay on the front(factory prices) or back (buy a press and assorted gear).
Personally i cant afford not to reload if i shoot any of my .30 caliber rifles.
Just something to consider.
.30 cal performance aint cheap.

Like Don says, reloading is the way to go. Less than .50 a round for stuff as good as FGMM, and if you know what you are doing -- better.

Match grade .223 for around .30.

A decent reloading setup isn't cheap, but if you shoot a lot within a year or so it will pay for itself.

308 is expensive. If you want to play, you have to pay.

Hornady 168gr A-Max slightly beats out 168gr FGMM in my JP.

Fixed it for you.

Another vote for FGMM 175gr.

why downgrade to blasting ammo?
the ones you use that shoot sub moa consistently is already built on a solid reputation

don't change anything just buy more of the 168 match rounds

pm sent on other match grade ammo

You don't need to by high end ammo for these distances. The regular cheap 150gr American Eagle or the PMC equivalent will be just fine. There isn't a need for a heavier bullet with slightly more precision at 500 yards.

Isn't the Hornaday "Steel Match" supposed to be pretty good and it's a lot less then $1 a round.
