Default Winchester LRP Defective

First time I have ever had this happen. Sighting in a new Tikka T3X rifle with mild .243 loads I had a primer burn through spraying debris and hot gasses in my face. Looking the gun over I saw it also burnt a ring in the bolt face. I don't think it will hurt the rifle to much since the burn is in the area where there is a gap between the primer and case. Just really pisses me off its was the 1st day out with a new rifle. I also have about 700 rounds loaded of 270, 308, 22-250 and 375JDJ using the same lot of primers. Not sure I want to pull them all down or take a chance on shooting them and possibly doing more damage.

There were issues with Winchester LRP's a few years ago with the problem you experienced. There were threads on this on the net with some lot numbers.

I've had this happen many years ago with a bad lot of Remington 9 1/2's.

Here's a Calguns thread on it from 2012: https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/...d.php?t=623587

Thanks Flight762
I am starting to find there's lots of information about this occurring. I also emailed Winchester with my lot # of the primers. I think Ill just shoot them up practicing at the range. Other than pitting the bolt it didn't feel dangerous, more like having hot sand blown in my face.

That first picture is a huge problem. Certainly hope Win responses are positive.
I've had pretty good luck with CCI LRP's. Maybe next buy, try some. Damn.

Ho Ree Clap !!!! .. Why is that primer sticking out so far from the case head ???... Semi-auto rifle with way over pressure reloads ??.. Brass fired to many times and loose primer pockets ??.. I'm curious really,, but I do use CCI primers in my 308 loads with lc. brass...... Win in many other loads with commercial brass...
Cheers....

Yes I would be really concerned if it came out of the rifle that way!!!
I decapped the primer for the picture. The primer was sitting normal after the shot and wasn't flattened out at all.

What's the lot # from your batch?

I've been using lot #KNL182G without any issues.

They were from lot #GGL297G. My next box of 1000 is lot #MML476G. I let Winchester know about both lots I have.

The only problem I have had is with the LRM win primers. I had 3 that were duds out of a brick in 2013. Of course the 800 I shot at the local range were just fine. I fly to Africa and the 1st 3 rounds when check sighting my rifles are duds. Thankfully they were the only ones to do so for both my daughter and I during the hunt. Brought them home and took the ammo apart and all was assembled correctly. Tried them in another rifle and still not work. I am sure it was the way they were handled. All brass was hand primed and the primers were not handled with my hands.
Never happened before and has not since. It was embarrassing to start the hunting that way and I worried about it during the hunt.

It would be nice if a Qualified Firearms Examiner had an opinion bases on the photographs.

One thing is for sure:
I've seen lots of rifle shooters switch from some unknown primer to the CCI military grade rifle primers. I don't know why, except for the Garand & M1A shooters, I just know that the reloaders made a primer brand switch.

Secondly:
Fed or Winchester pistol primers have never let me down, period. However, seating current CCI primers feels more uniform with superior appearance.

This is not intended to be a commercial for CCI and I know the OP was referring to rifle and not pistol primers. Hope all works better for the OP.
