Default CaPRC club shoot Satuday March 27th

Come on out and join us for our first "new longrange shooter" intro of 2010.
This will be THE shoot to learn how to use your longrange gun and spend some time shooting at 600-1000yds.

Our shoots will be a little different format this year.
Last year, we had a zero and dope gathering session as part of every shoot.
That ends up taking more than half the day so this year we are going to change that up.
We will have three styles of shoots this year.
Course of fire "A" will be precision targets from 35yds to about 300yds with a mix of different positions that get you off the ground and into more non-prone shooting positions.
Course of fire "A" requires that the shooter already has a solid zero and knows his dope out to 400yds.
Course of fire "B" will be longer range targets from 475 out to 1000yds, mostly prone.
Course of fire "B" requires that the shooter already has a solid zero and knows his dope out to 1000yds.
Course of fire "C" will be our traditional zero and dope gathering session where we will help new shooters get on target all the way out to 1000yds.
Course of fire "C" will be open to new shooters without a proper zero or dope as well as anyone else that wants to join us.

For more details of what we are about, read our announcement here:
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=162630

We meet-up at a park-and-ride in Newhall and carpool out to the range.
The address is 23628 Newhall Ave.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...h&z=16&iwloc=A
Please note that Newhall Ave used to be called San Fernando Road.
Outdated online mapping and in-car navigation systems still show San Fernando Road, but the sign on the freeway now says Newhall Ave.
There are multiple park-and-rides on Newhall Ave so make sure you arrive at the correct one which is just over 1/2 a mile west of the 14fwy on the north side of the street.

If you plan to attend and you are coming from the south, please arrive at the Newhall park & ride between 7:30am and 7:45am on the morning of the shoot.
We will work out the carpool situation at that time.
We roll out as a caravan at 8:00 sharp and don't wait for late people.
It's about an hour's drive to the shooting location.

Trucks and SUV's are preferred for navigating the 1000yds or so of dirt roads once we arrive at the shooting location.
In the past, passenger cars have made it up the road, but many people are not comfortable on the dirt roads in a car due to the conditions of the dirt roads.
In this case, cars can park just off the asphalt and we will shuttle you up to the shooting position as required.

If you live north of the greater LA area, please PM me for directions on where to meet up with us on the way to the shooting spot.
We should be arriving at the shooting spot right around 9am.

Some things to bring:
Precision rifle wearing a scope with target knobs, eye/ear protection, sunscreen, chamber flag, 60 rounds of match quality ammo, printout from a ballistics program showing your bullet drop in moa or mils as appropriate to your scope, shooting mat or blanket, bipod, some kind of rear bag or sand sock, small notepad to take notes, pencil or pen, laser rangefinder, food & water for 6 hours, backpack or bag to carry everything.
Bring what you have, don't worry too much about what you don't have.
We always make do with what we have.

This is a Precision Rifle event so if the gun/scope/ammo is not capable of shooting tight groups, it will detract from your overall experience at the shoot.
Please have your rifle zeroed at 100yds and your knobs set to zero.
If you need help with this, we can do it at the shoot, but it takes a lot of time that is better spent putting rounds on targets much further away than 100yds.

Semi-autos are welcome as long as they have brass catchers or the shooter employs some other method to eliminate hot flying brass.

A view of the targets from the firing line:

We will be out in the high desert so dress accordingly including a hat and hiking boots as we will sometimes be moving around on steep terrain.
Weather should be somewhere between 30 and 110 degrees.

Some cell phones will work at the shooting spot and we have had 3g service in the past.

Please RSVP in this thread by the Friday before the shoot if you plan to attend.
We need to get an accurate head count of how many to expect.
Non-shooters are welcome of course and you will still learn a bunch even if you are not shooting.
When you RSVP, please make a note to whether you need a ride or if you can give someone a ride that does not have a truck or SUV to make it up the dirt roads.

A $20 donation to the club helps us buy more targets and supplies.

I just picked up my Savage .308 and really want to do this. Is this something a newbe into precision shooting can attend? If so what would be the best things to do to prepare? I've been working on getting the rifle zeroed at 100 yards.

What else do I need to do?

Jeff

Yes!! A newbie SHOULD attend this months match. The "c" course is meant for new shooters and you will get help in getting out to 1k

Zero you rifle for 100 as best as you can and come on out. You will most likely need to re-zero when you get there but thats fine because there is usually a short zero session to get everyone started. You'll have a blast. What kinda scope did you put on the Savage?

Read the first post in this thread very carefully.
Almost all your questions should be answered there.

Ini addition to the clinic we put on that Randall links to, anyone can come out to shoot our regularly scheduled practice session. We can help new shooters there get their gear worked out, and get them on target from 200 to 1000 yards.

From the link he provided check the link to our practices, and our forum for more info.

Socal or Norcal, we have you covered with some of the best shooters around.

I'll be in San Diego all that week, should be back Friday night, hopefully I'll be able to make it. As of now count me in, going to try and get some of the other guys from my unit to come to, including Casual Observer.

Will need to catch a ride from the staging area.

So, I have a new Savage 10 FLCP-K with a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm scope. I know this is probably not the perfect scope for long range but it's what I have at this time.

I worked on getting it close to zero at 100 yards last weekend and it shoot pretty tight groups. Again, I'm a newbie at long distance shooting but am very excited about coming out and learning more!!!

I live in Santa Clarita and will meet all in Newhall. I have a four wheel drive FJ Cruiser and can pack a couple more people in if anyone wants to ride with me.

Jeff

If you don't end up coming then we need to make arrangements for those rings

Are you supposed to send your stock in or something?

Sweet... I'll grab it from you on the 27th

Yes i did. I was totally happy with my loads w/ 4831 @ 46.5 and 2.830. Lets hope the 4350 can produce as well.

I got 1lb of 4350 after the match on Sun. Im headed to the range this weekend to test it vs the 4831 over the chrono and to see how the 4350 does accuracy wise.

Haha I'm gonna give most of the credit to the rifle and the builder. Im doubting the change in powder will take away from it much if any. The 4350 should be just fine

Agreed. I ran a couple loads of 4350 through my rifle and had the same POI at 100 as my 4831 load. It should work great.

Everything is still on for Saturday.

Since Randall is not going to be there, is anyone going to meet at the park and ride who has been to the spot before? I need someone who can meet everyone at the park and ride to guide everyone up.
