Default Nate Harrison Grade

Sheriff and tribal security came out there today. The land has been purchased by one of the tribes. No shooting signs are going up in the next few days.

I was there earlier this afternoon. 3 Black Sheriff SUVs roll up and verbally give us the bad news NO SHOOTING signs have been posted for over 6 weeks, but the Pala Reservation will be posting more signs as you head up the mtn. The new signs are planned to be posted within the next few days.
Sheriffs suggested going to the Pala Range (off Hwy 76) or the Escondido Fish & Game range (off Lake Wohlford Rd in Valley Center) And even suggested an area off Palomar Mtn?

BTW, today was the busiest I've seen Nate Harrison with well over 50 shooters in 6 separate staging areas. Doesn't anybody work anymore?

There were several groups of enthusiasts at the top (my group included) Sheriffs gave us a visit about 2pm. They informed us that the Pala Reservation purchased most of the land, as to how much they were unsure. But the next few days will have more "No Shooting" signs as you travel up the mtn. The Sheriffs also mentioned new gates will be installed to keep people off the now private property.

I've seen a couple signs on some of the turn-outs. But I thought the top area (and maybe the one below it that I consider the middle area) were on slices of BLM land. Wondering how the tribe could purchase BLM land. If, however, there's an area off Palomar Mtn., that's better than nothing. Both Pala and Escondido F&G ranges are private so no go without a membership.

2/20 the day another free shooting spot died!
I found this but it appears to be on a very outdated website!
Palomar Divide Road Open Area Portions of the Palomar Divide road remain open to recreational shooting. From the beginning of the forest boundary on Palomar Divide Road (9S07) which is located near mile marker 42 on Highway 79 up to the junction of Oak Grove Road (9S09) and Palomar Divide Road (9S07) (in Section 25, Township 9 South, Range 1 East near high point lookout) remains open to recreational shooting. The Forest will continue to monitor the use in this area. [NOTE This area is temporarily closed as of May 2004. The USFS has proposed a permanent shooting closure for this area] Palomar Ranger District, 1634 Black Canyon Road, Ramona, CA 92065 - (760) 788-0250 for the current combination and additional information on recreational shooting locations on the District.

I know there used to be a place off the 79; it was just east of the 371 turn-off, and I think it was also referred to as the Palomar Divide Rd. Unfortunately, it was closed several years ago. The homeowners to the north reportedly were tired of getting stray rounds in their yards due to the numb-nuts who didn't care about their backstops and were generally going full gangsta anyway, judging by the trash they left behind. (Gee, that could've also been a contributing factor.)

Well you'll never see me at a Pala casino again... This was one of my favorite locales for drills, bowling pins, steel, etc. I would greatly appreciate a PM of any other spot in the North county where I could resume my shooting activities. Thanks. -Chris

This is going to push all the traffic to the other spot. Which is iffy already due to rookie BP's

it was surely a nice spot to shoot clays. I'd appreciate a PM as well for another spot in the North County.

One of the elders accompanied the Sheriff's up the mtn today- Big heavy guy.

Saw two steel plates hanging on a tree limb approx 380yrds from our shooting spot. One was an Orange painted triangle hanging by two lengths of chain. The other a White colored circle. Now those were fun to hit and not to many other shooters were aware the targets were even there.

Dang I've only been out there three times but sucks to have another one shut down.

Not only is the Pala Range rediculously expensive. Public shooting is only Monday and Friday.

I wonder if it would be possible if enough San Diego calgunners got together and bought some land somewhere that we could all use for shooting. Then it would be private land and , we wouldn't get hassled . We're running out of local places to shoot.

The Rock Pile was private land I think and the county still shut it down.

I was sad to hear that it was being closed to shooting but the fact that they're putting a gate up is the worst!

I used to go shooting there every once in awhile when I lived in Vista. The view while the sun was setting on a clear day was amazing!

I remember seeing a house pretty far up there, I wonder if they had any hassles with this.

I do want to know who the heck manned up and took those out there. saw them out there a month ago when i went.

Mine was a big 18" diameter circle that i left out on the hillside at like 120yds or so.

A buddy of mine went there a couple weeks ago. He said there was a torched car out there on the lower section. Wonder if that was the final straw ? Even though it had nothing to to with shooters.

What sucks too is there is quite a bit of people that drive that up to Palomar I'm assuming. Now they'll have to go all the way around.

Come on now. Was it really that great of a place to shoot? Scenery is nice, but the shooting left a lot to be desired unless you were just out to make noise. There are other places to go if you talk to the right people.

Actually, the range is run by palefaces who don't get paid to do so. All of the money paid by members and visitors goes into range upkeep and improvements.

Inside SD county. I don't really care for the county line areas. If I want to shoot in the desert I'll get some friends together and head to Barstow.
Honestly, I do most of my shooting at Pala. The range fees are a small price to pay for what you get. I go a couple times a month and learn a lot compared to just going to a spot like Palomar and just shooting into the hillside. $30 a month after the initial buy-in doesn't seem like that much to do something I really enjoy.

I am just getting into the sport with my son. We have frequented NHG several times and will miss the opportunity to shoot there. That said I really want to join an outdoor shooting range and will look into Pala. I was considering Escondido but I believe I would need a member recommendation and I don't know any.

well if anyone has a close spot like NHG please PM me with info. I will not share this spot nor will I leave any trash there. Hell - I'll take a couple trash bags and pack out more trash that I produce out there!

Interestingly enough, I heard shooters up there this afternoon. Definitely sounded like whoever it was had to be shooting in one of the lowest areas.

I have heard that the lower shooting spots are for NA folks only. The two upper spots were open to general public.

Anyone have an update on this site?
