Default 5.45x39 AR15 uppers?

Guys I have been thinking about getting a 5.45x39 upper. Does anyone have one who could share their experiences? I have been looking at the Adams Arms 5.45 piston upper and Spikes tactical DI upper.

Seconds on this guys and gals!!! I have been looking at both of these uppers as well and the reviews seem to be mixed however the reviews were last updated on the AA back in 2011.. So maybe the kinks got worked out by now. Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I hate to bump this yet again, but I would love a good 5.45 upper so I wouldn't have to get an ak74... please someone say something productive....

Seriously?

5.45 uppers are decent enough. Get one that has some sort of protective coating on the barrel like chrome or Melonite. Pistons aren't needed, but if you want it, go ahead. Once ammo becomes available again (it is kind of scarce right now) get a couple of flavors to try out. I have a home-built one that uses mostly Adams brand parts, and it has some brands of ammunition that it likes, and some that it won't feed at all. Your mileage may vary. If you can get a case or two of the Russian 7n6 surplus ammo, and it shoots in your gun, I highly recommend it. While it is corrosive (mildly), it is also very good ammunition for the day the zombies come. Wolf also makes a very effective 55 grain soft point which both expands reliably, and holds together. Two features rarely found in Russian made ammo.

Track down some Ammo Storage Components magazines too. They have some 10/30 ones that are good. Their 30 round ones are very good too, if you have older magazines to rebuild.

I got in on the Spikes Tactical 16" Mid-Length 5.45x39 Upper a while ago and I'm loving it. I did have to change out my hammer spring for an extra power one but other than that, it's easy easy. I'm using my straight body .223 magazines and have yet to have any feeding problems, nice being able to shoot all of that cheap surplus! Did you have any specific questions on it?

I have the adams arms piston upper. Runs perfect, easy cleanup no gas in your face. Runs best with a pof roller cam pin and a heavy buffer. I have run 1k rds with a standard trigger group and had only 1 fail to fire and the primer was struck hard. just failed to ignite.

I run rev m windowed pmags and ASC mags with no issues.

If it was not for the likelyhood of a mail order ammo ban happening in a year, I'd get a 5.45x39 upper.

I thought about it and I dont want to have a gun I will have a hard time finding ammo for in the future. I'm saving up money for when .223 hits the sub $500 a case mark.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback. Guess I will be going with an AA as right now I can get one for around $700 vs the spikes at $850.

AA is the way to go. Midway has them in stock for 719. Spikes is nice but for corrosive ammo di is not ideal

I believe AIM is suppose to get another run of the Spikes Midlength 5.45 uppers in the near future. AIM is the exclusive distributor for Spikes 5.45 upper.

Be aware that midway won't ship the upper to California because of the 30rd mag that comes with it. If you have a buddy out of state, ship it to him and have it forwarded to you with the mag disassembled.

By the way midway will not sell any aa 5.45 uppers to California residents because of the 30 round magazine. Elitetacticalcomponents will and so will huldra arms.

LWRC makes one as well..

A member had one for sale on here recently ... it's sold but I think he still has ammo.

Yes serious get the Ak74. Ive been shooting a 74 for about 6 months now i love it. Cheap ammo,,,,but thats also the prob. The ammo (surplus spam cans) is not allowed at most ranges ( i hit BLM land) and is very corrosive gunks up a lot, you absolutly have to clean it by next day (sweets 7.62 works good)
A few guys make brass but are expensive and never in stock

Im building my 1st AR now I cant see shooting that ammo through it.
The space you have in the recievers dont compare equally (why aks are known for reliability) i think youll start to jam.

build an AK nothing like and old skool eastern block commie weapon to add to your collection.

I have a S&W 5.45 upper I got a couple of years ago, never had a problem with it. I have one 5.45 magazine, but generally use 10 rd 5.56 mags loaded with 9 of 5.45. It's not super accurate (surplus ammo after all), but it's cheap fun. I'm getting low on 5.45, so I just ordered another spam can of 5.45 surplus tonight.
