Remington Thunderbolts
Looking thru some metal ammo cans today and came across six bricks of Remington Thunderbolt 22LR I had forgotten I had this, I'm guessing I bought this around 1986 or so, been stored good wonder how it will shoot?

check the projectiles and as long as none of them have sunk in to the casing, and the ammo isn't corroded, they'll probably shoot just like you walked out of walmart with them today.

Back when I bought these probably Kmart this stuff shot great in everything I used it in, a lot thru a stock 10/22, Browning SA22, Marlin 60 & Browning Challenger.

I got a brick of Thunderbolts priced at $9.95, I think from the 90's. Those were the days!

Way back when if we were in Kmart, White Front or Gemco I'd stop by the sporting goods section and if brick of 22's were on sale I'd grab it, even my wife if she was out and saw one under $10 she'd buy one. But we shot a lot of 22's back then.

Remington Thunderbolts have been Jam-O-Matics for me. I would rather just empty my mags and throw them at the target sometimes.

I haven't tried the new stuff but I don't recall us ever having a problem with it back then, we really just bought by price and not brand back then, those rifles just fed and shot everything without a hitch.

I shoot Thunderbolts because I absolutely LOVE being annoyed at the endless amount of FTFs. If I had a nickel for every accrued minute, from every 10 second wait time before clearing the chamber, I would have enough to buy another bulk box of Federal Auto Match. My GSG 1911 digs the **** out of those.
Thunderbolts DO have a cool sounding name though. EDIT: I had a little fun with Photoshop today... Last edited by thegreasepit; 07-03-2013 at 4:09 PM.. |

Not sure about the new stuff but I cannot recall a FTF when this ammo was bought. Perhaps the quality has changed. I'm going to take a brick of this out and see if its like the new stuff.

I've been shooting a new box of Thunderbolts and seriously FTF 1 out of 5. Another 1 out of 5 stove pipe while a second round gets jammed into the mix. Gets frustrating but then I just remember it slows down my shooting . Then I remember it still sucks.

I'm thinking of listing the remainder four bricks in the for sale forum but only local sale. I have a fair stash of 22LR could spare these.

I just made a trade for two bricks with a member who wanted something with a little more zip.
Still have 0 left. Member local just talked me out of it.

I used Thunderbolts when I went through my Appleseed class. Made Rifleman. The Appleseed instructors were amazed, as the Thunderbolts are pretty universally despised. Guess I got lucky. For my 10/22, they worked fine.
