If you are going through all the trouble to photoshop patches/badges/nameplates, why not hire real models that know what they are doing?

If this concerns you, this is probably not something you want to do. However, there are companies that uses active police and military officers for their models. Just check out 511tactical.com

If you're planning on using official emblems/logos/vehicles/etc, I'm thinking you're probably going to have to get official departmental approval. If not, or if you're going to mask out sensitive parts of images, why would you Need "real" LEOs? Just curious...

The reason why we want to use active officer is because hiring a model and providing all the equipment (radio, holster, handgun, handcuff, patch embroidery, belt, etc..) cost us too much time and too much money. Also, we need real props such as police cars, motorcycles, etc in our images. Basically we need this to look real. We are looking into a modeling agency but I thought I would throw this up here to see if anyone is interested. |

So you want an off duty to bring his dept. PV and his full uniform to pose for free. Dude thats asking alot and no dept. is going to sign off on that and if someone does it they will most likely get fired.

FYI, many agencies, especially LASD, have registered badges and patches as intellectual properties. LASD will quickly slap a cease and desist order on you. Any deputy using a county vehicle or department uniform or badge will get disciplined.

I contacted the local police department in my area for more information. When it comes to using a department logo and patch in the images, there is a strict procedure that we need to follow. We have to submit a letter to the department for permission. This is not common but it has been approved by some departments. Some department I talked to (LAPD and Brea PD) gave me a definite no because of trademark issue.
This can be a long process and something we are not interested in. To avoid all of this issue, we will provide you with a uniform shirt, fake badge and emblems for the photo shoot. However, we need you to bring your own duty gear such as radio, belt, body armor, holster, handgun, boots, etc.. For now, the best we can do is offer you free items for your time. We have some Streamlight Stingers sitting on our shelf right now... |
