Default MLC and others!

Alright you lever shooters. What's happening lately? I know Mark[golfish] is laid up/recovering, hopefully; I'm finally back to normal[?] after my trip.
Got some plumbing work to do at the house, but, need to cut loose with some lever blasting. SOON! After the house crap, I be shootin'!

Looking at Thurs or Fri this week to get to our spot. Gonna be chilly in the mornins', though; predicted lows are 34F for Thurs and 37F for Friday. Highs 58 and 61. Wind shouldn't be too bad. Nothin' like cool days in the desert! I have more handloads to test, too.

Ouch! Looks like a re-pipe for the house. I'll know more this afternoon.
Did NOT want to do this right after our trip. Damn it!

Ouch!! Lead to copper, or copper to copper?

Congrats on the new 45/70 Spyder.

Mark, was copper[leaky crap!], switching over to PEX type. Supposed to be the new thing. Doesn't get electrolisis[?], doesn't corrode, blah, blah. Anything is better than what i have now.
Glad you were able to get online. That's an improvement. I'll have a beer or two for ya! Sheese, I need some after this plumbing nonsense.

Good to see you post, Mark! Congrats Spyder on the new gun. That's more than likely going to be my next purchase: a good, short, light, handy, big-bore, long-brass, lots-O-powder, big-heavy-bo0lit-goin-real-fast lever rig: an 1895 in .45-70. THEN I'll lay in the dough for a .375 bolt... First things first!

I'm all set for the Lower 48 with this 270-grain jacketed flat point .44 mag belching forth @ 1500+ fps from my "Wind River Lite" (1894 SBL).. but I do need me some better Grizz medicine for the northern territories.

(The Special on the right is assembled with a 255-grain Keith LSWC over 7.5 grains Unique for +/-950 fps from that there Ruger single-action flat top.)

NOW THEN, TOM... sorry to hear about your plumbing job. I take it you won't be available later this week for some lead chuckin' in the MOJAYVEE?

I'm actually annoyed with my 1894CSBL right now. I scoped it to work up a load, and accuracy is crap. I'm wondering if it has always been shooting like this, or if I did something to make it bad. It's several inches with almost all ammo, factory and my own loads, 38 and 357, at like 35 yards.

But then it occasionally shoots a nice tight 5 shot group. I'm confused and irritated...but that will be a project for April. No time to mess with it until then.

Chris, doesn't look good for me to shoot this week. Re-pipe, inspection and dry-wall patching is gonna tie me up. I'd certainly rather be shooting. Rats!

Well, dammit, Tom... You take care of bidniss. I'll be back at work week after next but then intermittently, off and on, until late July when I start my 60-hr-weeks again.. Gonna be lean on the dollar/air ratio 'til then, but I'll have time to **** off! See.

So, by the time you get your house back in shape, Mark should be almost completely mended, and a lil' MLC lead-chuckin' will be just! what the doct0r ordered.

I'm wondering if it has always been shooting like this...

You and I both need to get some lead sinkers and slug our bores (there's a specific number for each sinker size that works in each firearm bore size - I'll get back to you on that).

You already know this, but measuring bore/lands is the first step towards putting the rifle right again. Marlins in the past have been .002" over caliber which is only really an issue with lead-only projectiles (which are always a harder alloy than the soft lead core of jacketed pills that allow the bullet to *obturate* and fill the bore...).

blah blah blah

yep, I probably oughta do that. It could very well be really leaded too. I've got at least a thousand rounds through it now, and haven't cleaned it.

Oh! good lowrd...

You betcher bippie that's what it is...

Cut a piece from a pure copper Chore Boy and wrap it over a bronze bore brush and have at that puppy. cheeeziss!

*phew!* I'm glad it probably isn't anything more serious, like something requiring you to run larger bo0lits... then again you may be leading because that bore wants larger slugs... we'll see, won't we? /churchlady

Got some good news from Browning/Winchester today. My 92 has been fixed and shipped.

They said 3+ months right after they received it. Reminds me of the Doctor who tells you that you have 3 months to live, 3 years later your hiking to the top of Mt Baldy and the doctor is a genius.

Need to wait for Mark to heal up and get his Win back. Things are shaping up. Damn house!

I'm getting a little better everyday Tom. I'll probably start doing a little walking this weekend. I see my doc on Wed, I'm sure she'll give me the thumbs up.

Duece, I'll be sending you a PM as soon as my re-pipe is taken care of.
I need to check for another lever rifle. Hmm, what caliber? Must ponder.

Your first 45-70? Try 405grainers with 12-14 grains of unique if you’re not doing it already. It’s probably my single favorite rifle/load combo.

Goat, 45-70, 405 gr slug with 13ish grains of Unique. Thunderous. Does that thing cause rain when it lites? :-) How is the kick and accuracy?

It’s incredibly tame. They’re going somewhere around 1150-1300fps I believe, depending charge. I need to chrono some. Recoil is fine and accuracy is decent. There’s a cool little smoke cloud - especially in cold weather. It rainbows pretty aggressively which I like. It makes your plinking out to about 200 yards more involved since you have to compensate for drop. We shoot with your backs to the sun and through binos you can see the rounds arc in.

If I want powerful, I shoot Hornady 325gr up towards 2250fps.

Ye 'olnew 1894CSBL shoots well again. Not as much lead in it as I expected, only pushed out a couple of completely dark gray patches of slag before it started to come out halfway clean. I'll finish with a proper cleaning and start from scratch again, but the Bayou Bullets subsonic loads I shot today held to a quarter size or so at 20 yards with a 3MOA red dot on it, which is better than can be expected for that dot and offhand. My 40 S&W AR carbine with a 2moa dot was a bit tighter.

Main priority was finishing the 243 load development for this deer hunt I leave on in a week. It shot 0.77 and 0.91, so I'm happy with it. Back to the lever loading in a couple weeks.

45 or so hours until I pick up my new(old) Marlin, too!!!

Nice! Thanks for the update!

I use a piece of pure-copper Chore Boy wrapped around a bronze brush to remove lead buildup when it might occur.

No kidding Mark! Now that this house of ours no longer leaks and the walls are fixed, I'm a needing to shoot. I have a few other minor irons in the fire, and Mark, we'll certainly wait till you're good to go. No rush. I'll give you a jingle Mon. Alright you lever lovers, lets hear some updates. I'm gettin' back to normal around this damn house and I'm feelin' antsy. Spring is here!

These are the times when UPS really ticks me off. I waited all day for my gun to be delivered. Next thing I know the UPS web page says that they "Attempted Delivery" ..my whole family was home all day, I was in my garage with the door open during the time they claim to have attempted delivery. Of course a call to complain lands of deaf ears.

Now I get to wait all day tomorrow for delivery.
