Default Need some free state pistol opinions

In preparing for the move to UT next month, I'm putting together a short list of pistolas I want to check out for carry options. I already have a CZ P-01 which I'll continue to carry, but want to expand my options. Probably a polymer frame since the P-01 is metal frame and would be nice to have a lighter option. Doesn't have to be real compact and I'd like to have decent capacity, like 15+. I'm thinking in the ~$500 price range, give or take.

I've been considering the following so far, all 9mm:

S&W M&P 2.0 compact 3.6" barrel

CZ P-10 compact

Sig P320 compact

Walther PPQ 4" barrel

I know there are members here who have these so looking for first hand experience. I just want something decently priced with a good reputation and reliable. I also know there are other good options so I'm open to suggestions. This will be just the first of many.

As an offshoot, anyone have experience with the FN 509 Tactical 9mm? That would be a full size carry but I've looked at that one too. Intriguing with the extended 24 round mags. Would be good for longer excursions.

TIA!

Glock 19, Gen 5 or Glock 45. You won’t care where you take it....from the urban streets of SLC to the natural beauty of Zion or Bryce Canyon (once you have your CCW).

There's also the Walther Q4 tactical, it's optics ready with a great trigger. I have a Q5 match and it's a dream to shoot.

Few people do full size carry in free states. Pocket carry is all the rage.

LCP 2 is great for that.

First on my list would be an Akai AND Atlas open guns. Followed by a couple of their limited rigs.

But I am only into pistols for USPSA and am more of a rifle guy.

Enjoy your new found freedom and have fun with your new toys.

P365 is a great choice at 12+1 (and it shoots nice, too).

VP9 is worth checking out, too.

I wouldn't personally CCW a "tactical" model with suppressor sights and an extended barrel, but that's just me

I'm definitely considering a P30 as well. I'm a huge HK fan myself. I already have a USP 45 compact so that'll be my 45 carry option. I also have a USP 45 Expert but that's too big to carry.

Ugh, forgot to list the VP9, it's been on my radar too. I'll check out the P365, haven't looked at that one yet.

I'm also thinking about a Springfield XDM compact 9mm. I rented one once at a range and was blown away at how well I shot it.

I have the USPC's next gen... 45C, awesome gun!

I went with the P2000SK for edc iso the P30. I made the right choice. Besides, I'm in the minority that would rather have a .40 over a 9 - Any day!

On the lookout for a USP Tactical and/or a USP CT, as my sig says. Just puttin it out there!

Another vote for the P365. Bought one about 2 months ago and it's been my "go-to" lately for EDC. Easy to conceal, light, has good capacity, and shoots really well for the size.

I carried an M&P .40c for a few years. Have moved to a P229 in .357 Sig. I never feel over-gunned and seldom feel under-gunned. I also have the .40 S&W barrel for the P229, so I can pick my poison at the range. Harassed for buying expensive .357 Sig ammo, or harassed for shooting the .40 "Short and Weak." I didn't move to the 229 out of any fault of the S&W .40c. I just picked up the 229 for a good price and after a few range sessions realized I shoot it a lot better. I carried a 1911 for years before the M&P, that may also have had a play in the 229 selecton.

+1 my brother just got one as a gift from daddy.... man that P365 is freakin nice. Fits very well in the hand and comfortable all around. Itโ€™s the only one itโ€™s size class that can hold 12+1. No wonder these scalpers here want upwards of $1,500 for it here! I see those prices and feel bad for the buyer that has to have it and willing to get ripped another a**hole because they are unfortunate enough to have family in a free state.

The Ruger American Pistol (8605 - w/ Lo Mount Novak Sights), or the (8606 - w/ Trijicon Night Sights). Both have 17 rounds capacity.

The Walter PPQ in 9 mm.

Yeah eff that noise. If I decide to get one of those I'll be paying about $500. Never had a desire to pay the off roster markup.

You're moving to Utah. Here in Utah you can get anything including switchblades. Prices are the national norm. Whatever you decide check Impact Guns in Salt Lake, Gallenson's in downtown Salt Lake and Doug's Shoot'n Sports in Taylorsville.. Avoid Cabela's..High prices.. except for ammo.

Having shot all of those guns, i own the P10c and love it. i put a talon grip on it to take the bite off of the grip.

Close 2nd is the M&P 2.0c, I haven't tried the 3.6" but the 4" is a beast. accurate and natural pointing. My brother has the 1.0 3." and it shoots great.

I have medium hands and the M&P is more natural for me, I had to put extended controls to get the slide release without changing my grip in any way..... M&P I don't have to move my thumb.

P320c is a nice gun but trigger is lack luster.

PPQ was disapointing, I expected way better out out of the trigger, but apex makes an aftermarket for it so thats an easy upgrade.

I'd say rent a few at the local range but P10c is my vote. I seriously love mine.

Get a 43, Shield 2.0 or P365. I have all three and I love them all.

I have an FN Fns9c and that thing is a shooter. The compact comes with 2 12 round mags and a 17 round full size mag plus grip extension.

The full size Fns9 comes with 3 17 round mags. Personally I have not shot the full size. But the compact is great, and a very good carry option as well.

Most of the newer stuff is striker fired, which you don't like. You're probably best off with an older design that's still on the roster, like a SIG 226.

If you have larger hands, consider the P320 Carry instead of the compact. The Carry is essentially a Compact with the full size handle.

Also, the newer P365 is dimensionally very close to the Ruger LC9, but allows a magazine capacity that holds more.

have you noticed any of the firing pin drag on primers with your 365? I want one so badly but there is so much on the internet about firing pins breaking due to repeated firing pin drag - some people seem to go a few thousand rounds without issue while others have said their firing pin broke within 500 rounds - supposedly SIG is offering a steel firing pin now, don't think that stops the drag, but hopefully solve the breaking firing pin issue - firing pin drag is somewhat common with many of the really small compact semi autos but it seems quite excessive with the P365

the FNS 9c is my current CCW carry and I agree with you 100% - very reliable, sometimes i'll just pop it in my jacket pocket and im out the door - im not sure if they're still giving 3 mags with the compact - shortly after i bought mine i heard that started selling it with only 2 mags - i got 2-12 round mags and the 17 rounder

I haven't noticed it personally and have had zero issues with mine. Admittedly I don't have a ton of rounds through it. I'm currently sitting at right around 1500 rounds with 250 of those rounds being +p self defense ammo. From the limited research I did prior to buying I was under the impression that the early models were the ones having issues with the firing pin breaking and Sig made some changes to the later production models. I'm not sure if there's any truth behind that but mine has a manufacturer date of October 2018. I'm very very happy with it and trust it to work and not have issues every time I decide to carry it, which is pretty much daily now. Once in a while I change up my carry to a G19x or just a G19, but more often than not it's the P365.

I really like that FN509 Tactical, took a look at one when I was in PA over thanksgiving. RMR ready and threaded barrel, it’s a bad***** pistol. But without shooting it, have no idea if I’d pick it over a G19X/45 or P320. Hopefully the OP can get a chance to shoot one before deciding.

It looks like you prefer the larger carry guns. I carry either a S&W Bodyguard 38 (on list) or a Sig P365 (don't believe it is on the CA list). On rare occasions I carry my G19 (first love) or a Kimber Ultra Carry II (surprisingly easy to conceal).

My buddy has the Sig 320 and I like it, its about like carrying my G 19 Gen 3. May get one with an optic for range use, but probably not for carry.

I guess it all comes down to what you feel comfortable carrying and shoot well. You should wait till after the move and rent the guns you are interested in to see what you think of them.

edit: Concerning firing pin drag on the P365. Mine is fairly new, built Sept 2018. It has firing pin drag but has cycled 100% since new. The drag itself is not of concern; it is only of concern if the firing pin breaks. Mine is only at 425 rounds but have confidence it will hold up. Reportedly SIG has addressed the firing pin issue, as well as a few others, in the latest production runs. Be aware of how Sig sights in their guns with night sights. They use a "European" hold where the front dot needs to cover the intended point of impact, hate it! Will probably change out the front sight, but otherwise accuracy is fine.

My favorite sights ever were the old SIG dot-the-I, pumpkin-on-a-post sights. Ironically like a modern Kahr.

There is nothing simpler and more reliable and a Glock.

There is nothing that holds 15 rounds that is smaller than a Glock 19. The Glock 19 Gen 5 is awesome. I have shot everything on your list, and far and away, I'd get over my hatred of Glocks in a working gun and pick up a 19 Gen 5.

Congrats on your move to UT. I'm jealous. I'd buy them all anyway.
