Default Any corrections officers in here

I'm retiring from the Air Force and I'm looking at corrections officer as my next career. I'd like to get the no BS on exactly what is involved; positives/negatives. I checked out some of the forums but most are geared towards existing CO's. There's a class in Napa but it doesn't start until September. Any insight would be appreciated.

You want to stay local or move around. Would you like to work at the state Level or County. Stay away from the private entities. Cdcr.ca.gov is looking to hire a few thousand new Co's over the next few years. The counties are also hiring but you will probably not make as much. If you are motivated and want to promote you can move up the chain pretty quick in CDC.

Positives. Good pay. Good Benefit. Good Health plans to chose from. Transfer anywhere in the state.

Negatives. Hold overs really suck when you first start. Lots of whiney inmates that always want to sue you for every little thing you do wrong. The inmates that are legit won't mess with you for the most part.but they well be the ones that will not hesitate to hurt you if ordered to do so. CDC is going through alt of changes right now and alt of the old timers dont want to stick around to see how screwed things can actually get.

At the county level things are a little different. Some counties don't actually run their own jails. Not enough money so they privatize it.the bigger counties is where you should look at. Check to see what the requirements are for the county you want to join. And if they are sworn peace officers or not. Lots of cookie cutter college's putting out Co training classes but do not guarantee jobs when you graduate. These places will charge you to attend. Be cautious about that. Last thing you need is to attend and pay for training when the agency that will hire you requires you to attend their Academy.

Thanks Warhawk. I don't want to move around, we've done enough of that. I'm looking at Solano county where they're opening a new jail just down the road from the house. Hold overs and shift work are nothing new to me and I understand the whole noob gets the **** end of the stick. I'll look into whether the class will be of use. GI bill will pay for it, so I have that going for me. Thanks for the info!

With your federal service already, have you considered BoP? Fairly easy to get on if you have the vet points imo. You just gotta pick an institution that is giving a hiring bonus. Initial pay isn't the best int he world, but it's ok; job isn't bad, benefits are good. I think you can stack your retirements?

If your a veteran there is age waiver for federal law enforcement. Typically it's constructive age meanin if u served 10 honorable years, add that to 37 then now you must be at least 47 to enter service. I think the only requirement is you must retire by the mandatory age of 57 no matter what. You must check OPM for clarification.

Yea any questions about the BoP feel free to ask, I'm a vet and currently drilling so I know a little bit about how it all works together. All I can say is once you combine it all it's a beautiful thing.

Fed CO at a USP. I work with some of these other guys. A lot more benefits at the Federal level for prior service military. Promotion and travel potential are great if you get a paid move. Military years of service count towards retirement when you buy back the time, so to speak. 1% per year. Pm me for any ???
