Wow I was always worried they would try this. My dad is on 100% ptsd disability from "NAM" and he has quite a few guns. I wonder if this means I need to transfer all of them into my name just in case? Problem is hes in AZ so that makes it even harder and more expensive. Plus he lives in the boonies and will not want to give them all up and I don't blame him.

Where it goes no one knows, where it is I can tell you.
A PTSD diagnosis by the VA right now does not put you on a list that will cost you your guns. I know of a case where a veteran was crying to the media about this and getting lots of sympathy; but of course he failed to mention he kicked the crap out of his wife, had a restraining order against him and pending felony charges - DUH. The sad thing is not all of the vets suffer from just PTSD; often PTSD is a symptom of traumatic brain injury or other problems need treatment - some of them can put their gun ownership rights at risk but PTSD alone will not. Politicians blowing smoke about it and our pro gun community making false claims about it need to be corrected. |

Ripon83 - I know of a similar if not the same incident your referencing about the idiot who tried to get his 15 mins of fame from the government taking away his guns...and yes, he did forget to mention that he was facing; and ultimately was charged for several felonies.
I know first hand that a PTSD diagnosis will not bar you from buying/owning/transfering guns. I have been diagnosed with PTSD and fighting it since 2007. It is not something people should take lightly and I agree that mental health should be a larger factor in weather or not someone should be allowed to own/operate a firearm. However, I will be the first to say that there is still not a single law/bill/amendment being proposed that would make anyone safer in this country. They can say that "mentally Unstable Vets" are a danger and should not own firearms all they want. But understand, if they want my guns they can habe em back one round at a time. Think if you will for moment everyone... Have you ever tried to take food from an angry honey badger? Cuz thats about equal to taking a weapon from a Marine! Sorry didn't mean to go on a rant there guys.... |

damn computer! As I said, most vets with deployments to Iraq/Stan seems to be given an automatic percentage of PTSD based on their review after deployment. My brother was given 50%, his other friend was given 70%, all based on your answer to the screening. His friend was worried about going through fire academy because of the PTSD rating he was given. Glad he passed and currently going through the academy at this time. Should be looked at on a case by case basis, not a blanket rule!

My coworker and I are MILTECHS working fulltime at the base.
My coworker had his weapons taken away after seeing his shrink the day before. The ATF showed up at his door with a search warrant while we were at work. His wife was detained and all weapons were removed. 2 of his neighbors one a retired Navy officer and the other a retired Marine SGM came out and protested to the ATF while they were going thru his house. They were both forced to go back inside there houses or risk being arrested based on obstruction because the ATF didnt like being told they were wrong. 8 months later and lots of $$$ for lawyers The court system found the Warrant was based on opinions and not facts. His lawyers tore up the shrink on the stand and his weapons were returned to him. He has 2 tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan so yes he does have PTSD but it does not affect his work ethics. His packet for Green to Gold is now approved and he will be getting his commission soon....he is now moving out of Calif soon..... In the end becareful what you say because somebody might take it out of context.... Last edited by davirene; 06-13-2013 at 7:04 AM.. |
