Default 2 Remingtons from WWII followed me home :D

I was up in the foothills Monday and happened to stop into one of my favorite stops for finding old crusty milsurps. I was looking at an old S&W pistol and the lady mentioned it was "owned by an old friend of the family who also owns the 1903s in the display case" and I almost tripped trying to get over there to see what they were. Turns out they had 3 1903 Springfields, one was a low number SA and the other 2 were Remingtons. The Remington 1903 is from April 1942 and was absolutely filthy!! The sign said "$450 if I clean it, $400 if you clean it". The 1903-A3 was beautiful and had cosmolene all over the bolt and a thin coat on the rest of the surfaces that had dried to a brown haze. I made an offer on both and they accepted, done deal!!

The 03-A3 is really amazing. It is in original condition as it left the arsenal, it has not been rebuilt. I can't find any evidence of it ever having been fired since proofing. The chamber is spotless and the bolt face is perfect. There was grease all packed in the chamber and on the follower. I posted it up to the CMP forums and got the opinion of the experts there that it is unfired.

The 1903 looks like it has been rebuilt at some point but strangely enough, it has the original stock.

Here they are:

That's like finding buried treasure. Hope the bores are good.

Exactly, I got to do the excavation myself too! You should see the bag full of patches and old socks I used to clean them up with.

The 1903 has a very good bore considering it is original. It's a 4 groove and has some frost in the first 1/4 or so near the throat.

The 1903-A3 is absolutely brand new like a mirror. I still haven't figured out what I am going to do with it, I am hesitant to shoot it.

Nice. Remington made a lot of nice rifles in it's day. They could not afford to make these today at market price. I have a few Remington's but I don't want to jack your post.

Well done.

Wow, Brian, those are nice.

What cartouches are on the unissued 03A3?

Thanks Steve, I really got lucky on these. I've been going to this place for many years and all I ever saw that was half-way interesting was an old Turk which I never did get a hankering to buy.

Here is a photo of the 2 of them the night I got them, you can see how filthy they were, especially the 1903:

The A3 has "RA (crossed cannons) FJA" on the left side, the (P) under the wrist, and the 4 little diamonds and squares with letters/numbers in front of the magazine. The 1903 has "[RLB] which is very faint on the left side, and a very faint (P) under the wrist.

Instead of posting up all the pics, here is a link to the photobucket album for the A3:

Here is the 1903:

Hey you should come out to Sac with us on Saturday, I'd bring them along since they haven't been to the range in a LONG time

I would love to, but I'm going to shoot two matches at MP range. Told others I would be there. Plus I only have FMJ. Sac has sheet metal compared to our range. Hey, you live next door to me. I am right off of Oakley road. Hope we can hook up soon.

Hey if you're not doing anything tonight, I got 3 friends coming over to eat some Elk burgers and BS about rifles. I'll be slapping them on the BBQ about 7pm, so if you want one, PM me.

Wow! Nice finds Brian! Maybe in Private, we can discuss your little hideaway gunshop...

How long did it take to clean the 1903?

I'd be hesitant to fire the 03A3 as well. I've seen models w/ two different rear aperature sights. Is that possible?

HAHA Yeah I doubt you'll get any useful information out of me, in fact I might send you the wrong direction

I got the 03 cleaned up in about 3 hours, mainly took extra time to check all the nooks & crannies and makes sure I got all the crud out of everywhere. The guys on the CMP forum recommended getting some odorless Mineral Spirits from Ace hardware so that's what I wiped the stocks down with. I was amazed to see the stamps on the 03 stock become visible. I thought it had no stamps until I cleaned it!
