Savage 10FP .308 w/ Lupy 3.5x10 VX-III at 100m shooting,

Hornady 150gr SST about .004 off the lands
Varget (weight listed in pic)
Rem Brass (I know...I know...)
WIN Primers

This is my first time out shooting my own reloads about a month ago. I was shooting through the chrony so I wasn't trying for accuracy but it just happened. Needless to say I have a few different loads in the 42-43.2gr ready to go for next weekend...

The 42gr group was .718" tossing out the flyer...

Default Savage 10

Took out the Savage 10 today and got some decent groups at 100 yards.

Here's the best group of the day...

And the rifle...

I'm not sure how to properly measure groups nor do I have the appropriate tools however it seems to be sub-MOA. Great rifle!!

For the low cost of the Tikka...they are sure hard to beat...at any price range...but for $450-600 ($450 for the blued models and up to $600 for SS) and you have to do nothing to them...no bedding,no trigger job or after market trigger,etc....and they will shoot sub 1/2" groups with FACTORY ammo....show me where to match that and I am there.

I am not a fan of one brand or another...I am a fan of out of the box tack drivers though. And out of all the rifles I have owned and/or shot...none have come close....at any price. Ok...my TRG-22 shoots 1/2" groups....still not as good as the Tikka's....but it cost me $2600.00.

I almost bought a Ruger M77 compact in .243 before I bought the Tikka .243...but the Ruger was close to $800.00 And the trigger sucked...so add another $150+ for a new rigger. ANd then there is the question of IF it would shoot as well. I know where I stand when I buy a Tikka.

I am hearing really good things about the Sako A7....it looks very similar to the Tikka with some minor upgrades....not sure it is worth the extra $300+ for those upgrades though.
I am thinking of buying one....will post review in a Tikka vs Sako A7 type post.

Take care,Stan
i wonder what tikka does to their rifles...

Default First clean at 1,000 yards

Cuyama, 2006. First relay on a clean center. Real light wind from 9:00. The second sighter is the 10 at 10:00, everything else was for score. (200-11x) It was shot with a 6BR Improved built on a 50 year old Model 70. Scope was a Weaver T25. Oh yeah, jacket and sling supported too.

no, just got home and ate dinner. No pics, the camera died, but it was what you would expect zeroing an aimpoint at 50yds.

trap was good though, did pretty well with my CD Field Tactical.

My Remington 700VS in 308 with 168gr SMK's, 39.5gr Varget, Federal match cases, CCI BR2 primers. I'm going out on a limb here and say I have approx. 4K rounds down the tube.. but I'm not sure as I never kept a log book on this rifle when I bought it back in '94 This was shot from a bench at the San Leandro Davis St. Range about 10am, spring of '08

I believe it is around 3/4" or less.. I should have taken the pic with a ruler in it. I'll have to see if I can dig up the target and measure it...

still working on it. this was first day at 100M with a supersniper scope 20x42, rra varmint upper with 20" bull barrel, and u-15 stock. RRA lpk with 2-stage trigger + doublestar lower. i tried sighting it in at 25M and was struggling. so an ex-navy guy said just go striaght to 100M. scope probably sighted for that and if i'm on paper already at 25m though a high, i shoudl be OK at 100m

rifle and scope outshoots me, of course.but not bad for first time out. my neck was sore after though. but i aim to be like the guys here that have 1-2" grouping.

  1. On your target, locate the 2 holes that are farthest apart.
  2. Use a ruler or caliper to measure the distance between the outside edges of those 2 holes.
  3. Take that distance and subtract the diameter of the bullet you were shooting.
There's your group size (the distance between the centers of those 2 holes).

I don't have any pictures to add to this thread but I wanted to throw in my two cents. Watching Stan's videos got me interested in Tikka's and I bought one used when it came up. About two weeks ago I bought another one. I LOVE my 223 varmint. I went to a range I don't usually go to today and started shooting at the farthest gong they at 400 yards. There was a girl there shooting what looked like a tricked out 700 in .308 and another guy shooting a .30 cal of some variety. Out of 60 shots I missed maybe five and those only because I was rushing, there was a stiff breeze blowing and the target had a 100 foot rise. It fun as hell to be watching through your scope as the two people on either side of you make swiss cheese out of the dirt and you just keep hearing "clang!" when you shoot. I love my Tikka's and it's all Stan's fault.

did you use a Rifle or a Hole Punch, for what ever reason your groups don't look like Bullet holes.

I agree, either he punched holes or threw marbles or shoot ultra low velocity rounds, like at 40fps projectiles....A rifle with 500 fps punches holes cleaner then those.

200 yard shot with 10/22 factory stock, 3x scope, federal bulk ammo from Walmart:

156 yard (range finder comfirmation) shot with AR15 DPMS 24" bull barrel, 6x scope, handload 75gr 24.3gr RL-15:

The three other shots that didnt group well with the rest were because of seating dept, I was testing out my L-R load.

My groups shooting from a bench with my LMT GPU using xm193.
Best group was a little under 1 1/2" at 50 yards and 3" at 100.

Approximate group size: .866 - .223 = .643 inches
You can't reliably use 0.223" as the hole size in the target without first measuring an actual hole in the actual target you are measuring.
The actual hole left by a bullet is usually 0.020" or more smaller than the bullet diameter.
Therefore, groups calculated by subtracting FULL bullet diameter from a measured group size are not accurate.

Thanks. It's a White Oak Armament Service Rifle upper. Nothing special about it, except I did opt for the 1/4 MOA sights. And the staked rear sight.

Well, I'm not one to quibble over .02 inches, so call it a .663-inch group then.

A .663-inch 10-round group.

A .663-inch 10-round group shot with iron sights.

Took my 20" Savage 10 FP (the most accurate rifle in my stable) out over the weekend. Here are some of the 5-shot 100 yard groups that I were getting off of the bipod. Ultramax 168 gr. match loads are the the left, PPU 168 gr. match loads on the right.

Close up of the best group of the day using the Ultramax ammo. The close up of the worst group of the day was mysteriously deleted?
