Where did you go to get approved? Santa Ana PD?
I always thought the Issuing agency did the live scan.

So on your initial interview date your investigator told you you're approved and to start your live scan? No good cause needed? No conditional approval?
Are you a LEO because you mentioned you're going to look into the M&P 40 as they're off roster'd, then again if you're a LEO you wouldn't need to get approved from OCSD to conceal carry. Are the OCSD doing something different now? Last edited by slixx1320; 05-20-2017 at 10:00 AM.. |

So you were approved before the live scan and the background check? Or did they approve you to continue with the process?

Approved, now what?
They must have sped up their process because here is my timeline:
Day 0: Submitted request for interview Day 0: (an hour later) Received interview date (6 months out) Day 191: Went to interview Day 196: Since my CCW firearm was not registered I had to submit a DOJ Intra-Familiar Transfer form Day 213: LiveScan fingerprinting Day 213: Submitted all supporting documentation that was requested from initial interview Day 233: Received conditional approval Day 237: Completed the required training and qualification Day 238: Submitted training certificate and qualification form Day 252: Still no word on the Intra-Familiar transfer. OCSD (and my CCW) is stuck until it is cleared Day 262: Purchased what is to be my EDC (not the original one with which I qual'ed). DROS started Day 272: Pickup up new firearm and CCW-qualified with it Day 273: Submitted new qualified paperwork for new firearm and asked that this new one be on the CCW and not the original firearm (since it is still being cleared) Day 275: Received final appointment to pick up CCW license (with only second firearm on it) Day 280: Picked up CCW license Total time:
This all happened here in OC fairly recently.

Purchasing a firearm is always a good thing. Nothing wrong about it. You can even do you're training before hand if you like. But just know that if you get denied, you will NOT get reimbursed what ever fee you've put thru to get as far as you've got (gun, live scan and training). Some people wait till they get the conditional approval to proceed w training (least that's what I did) some do it before hand taking a risk whether or not they get approved.
Now, I'm pretty sure when you went into the initial interview your investigator probably mentioned this, 1. Everything looks good! Start your live scan if you haven't already 2. If we have any further questions, we will contact you, but if you haven't already started your live scan please do so! 3. Have you started your live scan? Noticed how live scan pops up on almost all points?? They will most like not approve you w/out a live scan. Also, they can not approve you on the initial interview because they'll need to do a residence check as well. It's not the interview who does the approvals. It goes up the chain of command. They (investigator, deputy's, interviewer) are there to only gather your package so they can submit for final approval. When your live scan returns, residency check is complete and egood cause is sufficient... you will then receive a conditional approval thru email stating, if you haven't already done your training to get it done and submit it. |

What is your shooting background / History?
Have you ever had a formal class on- Marksmanship Shooting from concealment Shooting from a holster Etc Most modern pistols operate reliably. Some are easy to shoot, say glock 17/19 and some are difficult to shoot, say Ruger LC9 or snub nose revolver. So find a gun you shoot well and buy a few to keep- Home Car Person Work? Based upon your shooting skills, the best value if you want training is front sight.. lots of threads on the pro and cons of the place... but for $200 or less you can buy a lifetime membership....

As for residency check they come 2/3 times (my guess only). I don't know how many attempt they make before they go knocking on your neighbors doors. As long as someone's home to verify you live there you're good. You don't physically have to be there. They want to confirm you do in fact reside in OC. From what I know they don't poke around. Your live scan is all they need to poke around with. |

As far as clearance goes, it probably doesn't. I have a buddy going through the process as well and also holds a gov. clearance. His was just as long as mine. 2-3 weeks for live scan to return. My bro and his wife both got theirs within 2-3 weeks as well. They've already picked up their permit last week. It was roughly 2 months for them. |

Get a good belt. You can NOT buy a belt in a dept store that will work properly. I recommend https://www.hanksbelts.com/

I am confused, I thought Livescan was required prior to "conditional approval ".
Are you sure that you were not just approved to proceed with the application process after the initial interview?

You can still buy a firearm while waiting. In addition to the first gun I put on my application, while I was waiting for my license, I bought another one and filled-out a CCW addendum to have it added to my license (which wasn't completed at the time).

Out of curiosity, I have an 8" Classic DX S&W 629 .44 revolver, am I able to add it to my CCW? Or are there caliber restrictions in CA?

Your IA may have restrictions... San Bernardino only allows .25acp to .45, so the .44mag, or .454 Casull would be okay. That said, my instructor said that he's only had three men qualify with the big magnums... we're limited to 3 guns so I would not "waste" a slot with that gun unless you spend a lot of time hiking in the mountains where the concealment would be under a heavy jacket. OC now allows 5, so I might feel differently.

+1 on the Shield 9mm.
That's been my EDC for over a year now. Easy to conceal, accurate, light, and not too snappy. The G26 (and G19) is nicer, but the thickness makes concealment a bit more touchy.

I have one on my permit. It is virtually identical in size to the G26, but it's only 6+1. When I renew in December it will be replaced with the G30. Only a bit thicker, but 10+1, or 9+1 with the short mags. Here's some comparisons for you. Glock 19, Shield, Kahr P380 Top to bottom, G26, G36, G30 G26 vs G36 Top to bottom, G30, G36, and G26. The G30 has the 10rd mag, the mag is flush with the rear step using the 9rd mag:

Live scan going on over two weeks now, the website says it only takes 48-74 hours. What is going on? When I call the automated line the machine rarely understands my submission. How long did it take y'all?
Sweet comparisons, thank you. I'm weary of Glocks for CCW because the trigger is about as bad as a double action revolver for me. Last edited by Blue Line; 06-04-2017 at 2:43 PM.. |

CCW qualification does not generally allow for using a single action on revolvers, and on semi-automatics, they frown on (or flat out don't allow) anything lighter than 3-4 pounds. Factory Glock trigger pull us right around 5.5 and pretty consistent. Shield is up around 7, but again, once the gun is broken in it smooths out nicely. You don't WANT a "hair trigger" in a defensive situation. Your adrenaline is going to be pumping, your heart racing, your hands shaking, and your fine motor skills are going to be out the window. A competition level trigger would quite possibly result in a premature firing when you slip your finger into the trigger guard. When SHTF you are going to squeeze that grip like your life depends on it.
