We had a shooting range in the basement of the high school. Shooting 22lr rifles was mandatory for everybody. And military service years after high school was mandatory as well.
Yes, eastern Europe and Russia are quite different.

When I was growing up we would bring shotguns and rifles(usually 22RF) to school so we could hunt at friends ranches after school before going home or before shooting time ended. Sometimes showed up to school with birds we shot before school.

We did not worry about a gun case or locks either.

There was often ammo and ammo boxes in the cars/trucks at school even if there was not any firearms. That way if you wanted to hunt/shoot you just needed to get the firearm and go.

Knives were common in cars/trucks and many carried a pocket knife without any alarm or worry. Heck knives were sometimes a project in metal/wood shop, being made from old worn files.

Would not suggest that now!

No, not even close. Private ownership is pretty much limited to shotguns and bolt action hunting type rifles. I did read where the privileged class can now carry a handgun for self defense though, but not just anybody, you would have to be connected, much like here in most counties in California. This was just passed into law a few months ago.

Try that today and you're dead.

We are talking about two different thinks here.
1. Yes, nobody there really freaks out if they see a gun. And they do not really think teaching a kid about firearms will result to anything bad.
2. Yes, firearm possession by civilians is strictly enforced, a lot of hoops and rules, you need to be connected in order to get the permit.

So they trust 6 year olds with AKs but not average Ivan. That sucks. I welcome all Russians to come live in AK tolerant USA.

What was the point of bringing machine guns and RPGs in their schools? Any guesses?

Looks like they are 0 tolerance in schools and 0 tolerance at home too.

Russia is an awesome corrupt kleptocracy, I guess.

All this is about is the fact the Russians will NEVER forget the Nazi invasion of the USSR. Twenty million Russians died in WWII; it's a lot more than a war movie to them.

When I was active on rec.guns (over ten years ago), I corresponded off-line with a Reno-based member who was from Russia and who was obviously a gun nut with a lot of experience. I asked him how he became so familiar with guns growing up in the Soviet Union. He said in the USSR there were public shooting ranges everywhere (probably run by the Red Army), and anyone could go to the range any time they wanted and shoot military firearms as much as they wanted, no charge, ammunition provided. It was their version of the CMP.

But you could not take the firearms home with you.

Probably not so different these days, except I bet there are fewer public ranges since they can't afford them after 15 years of systematic looting by Putin's oligarch buddies.

Well the few Russians I have met are awesome people. The land is beautiful from what I have seen. The socialist government sucks a fat one, but all socialist governments suck.

My Russia is awesome comment was directed at the OP, who hopefully wasnt serious with his thread title.

Did the German national socialists (NAZIs) and the russian socialists work together during the first few years of WW2? Why all the starved Ukrainian people?

I believe the Ukrainians ended up fighting for the Germans. Although my memory in that area is fuzzy.

I always though it was rather generous to call Stalinist government socialist. It was like a dictatorship with 100% of the population in indentured servitude.

Grew up in the UK where my school had its own range - and still does to this day.

http://www.deanclose.org.uk/Dean-Clo...s-get-promoted

The kids in this team are 13 or below and are limited to 22LR's. After 13, they'll learn how to field strip an SA80/L85A2, get basic weapon handling instruction and a fair bit of live-fire range time.

I took an ROP police science class in HS. At the end of the year we went to the range. Fired .38s and shotguns. The L.E.O. brought a bunch of firearms from the evidence locker. There was a Thompson an Uzi a FA browning high power and some other stuff. I got to stay after class(best detention ever) and shoot the Uzi and the FA browning high power. The uzi had 0 recoil and the high power had significant muzzle climb during full auto fire. The L.E.O also put his swat vest, gas mask and helmut with balistic sheild on me and had me run 75M and then take a shot at a hostage situation target with his back up pistol(G36). I missed, but parted the bad guys hair. This was way back in '97. I miss the good ol days.

In Russia you have to own a shotgun/smoothbore for 5 years before you can get a rifled barrel weapon. You need a simple psych exam and a chat with local PD. Handguns are heavily restricted as is carrying knives. You need a cold weapon permit for a knife to be carried. Once you have your rifle there are tons of places to shoot including your own property depending on where you live. The Russian government even gives semi auto Ak-103 pattern rifles and Tigers to some of the tribes that live in the extreme north for hunting in their traditional ways. I have seen hunters there use Tigers on boats. I saw a shooting club where they would have Russian military come and bring FA weapons and let the locals shoot them. They also have a sort of civilian militia that has rifles. I saw armored car companies operate with Saiga 12 gauge shotguns and even 9x18 SMG's and Makarovs. In electronic stores and lots of supermarkets security guards have makarov pistols. So its not as restrictive as people think. Even during Soviet times the people could own firearms.
