Default American Sniper

I just started reading American Sniper by Chris Kyle. Do yourselves a favor and go get this book. It's well written and the author doesnt have an elitist attitude like in the book Killing bin Laden by Dalton Fury. I've only been reading it a couple hours and I'm on page 70, I simply can't put the book down.

Read that book and it was pretty good. Also try Joker One by Donovan Campbell it was my favorite Iraq war book. Gave an honest opinion of the war during its second phase.

I liked the book - lots of one/two page action snippets. Lots of funny stuff - some sad. Reminded me of all the friggin horseplay that used to go on. And the CoC BS...

I'd like to know if the story behind him knocking out Jessie Ventura is true or not. One of them is lying and I don't know who.

I just got done reading it....I was amazed at how much shooting he did aside from being a sniper. The building to building raids and firefights in the streets were intense, he is the deadliest sniper, but saw a lot more combat than just through a scope.

PM me, I will sell the book for 50% off what I paid for it + shipping (I bought it at Barnes and Noble)

Been reading American Sniper. Good read so far.

One of his weapons was a MK12 which he carried most busting into houses and buildings. In fact, he noted that he had to replace the lower w/ an adjustable stock.

I thought that MK12's barrel were 18inches instead of 16inches as he noted (page 99 for ref).

I just purchased this book the other night so that I can read it. I have to finish off Generation Kill first though.

Is Joker One really that good of a book? If it is I might have to pick it up.

Wow, just finished the book tonight. Im not a reader ( last book I read was 2 yrs ago during my honeymoon ha!) and I finished it in 3 days.
This book was great and well written. Put a whole new perspective on war, patriotism and heroism for a civi like myself. I have a new found respect than I had before and now understand better what I will never get to be apart of.
I HIGHLY suggest reading this.

JOKER ONE IS A MUST READ! It is a great book. The author is honest in his accounting of the events.

You guys would probably like Warrior Soul by Chuck Pfarrer. It's about his time as a Navy Seal in Beruit during the USMC Barracks bombing.I'll be picking up American Sniper as well.

Other good ones.

Hogs in the Shadows
Ronin
Trigger men.
One Returned (WWII)
My Men are my Heros
Shooter
Generation Kill

Finished it a couple of weeks ago. It's a good read. Kyle seems to be a salt of the Earth guy. I recommend it.

Sad about the ROE's theses guys have to abide by.

Ok so I have less then 100 pages left to the book. So far it has been great. Its nice how it takes both his and his wifes viewpoints on different aspects of his service.

I heard a radio segment about the Ventura incident, the SEAL said Ventura brought politics to a funeral and he punched Ventura. Ventura was ~60 years old. Didn't seem like anything far-fetched about the story, any argument is probably over small details.

So far, this is a really good book. I was actually stationed at Ali Al Saleem the same time he was there. Didn't know the SEALs were even on that base.

I finished this book a few weeks ago. I agree, it was a great read. I also enjoyed SEAL Team 6 memoirs of an elite navy seal sniper. I truly appreciate our service men and women and their multiple sacrifices to protect our country and freedoms.

I have the book but I haven't read it yet I loaned it to one of my buddies to read he is one of the Marine Scout Snipers on the books back cover and in one of the photo's inside the book. He (second from the left on the back cover pic) and the Marine with the beanie on are friends of mine. They spent a lot of time with Kyle during the (second) Battle of Falluja and they both share a bit of a different story than what they say the book reads. If your interested try reading Hogs In The Shadow's the USMC Scout Snipers in that book had SEAL snipers attached to their Sniper Platoon and the Marines S.S. in H.I.T.S. shared some of the same hides with the SEAL snipers and even one of the same photos as Kyle used in his book is in Hogs In The Shadows (baby crib shooting platform).

Here's the books I have and will be reading after I get American Sniper back.
Blood Stripes
Lions Of Kandahar
You Have to Live Hard to Be hard
War (Sebastian Junger)

I was a contractor whose clients were the AT/FP guys in the Army. I'd love to read a book that covered what it was like as a contractor in Iraq when there were just as many as us there as there was soldiers.
Especially if you were like me, and others, who weren't a Fobbit.

Seems like all the contractor stories are either about Blackwater, KBR or just general stuff about money wasted/anti war stuff like "Iraq for Sale".

Any vet who wants this book in CONUS...let me know.

I'll buy it for you and have it shipped. PM me with your address and something that shows you're in the military (unit name, location, pic, whatever). I'll do this for the first five.

Anyone else...I'm happy to lend you my copy if you cover shipping.

Rmatt: I've read several PSC books that were interesting that didn't cover it from a BW viewpoint. There was a Brit (Ashcroft) who wrote two books which I thought were pretty good. There was one called Save the Last Bullet For Yourself which was a bit out of date, but I liked. There was one called Dispatches from Hell from the POV of an old dude working in Iraq as a PSC which was good.

Fair warning, I am not nor was ever in the military, so if I think something is good, it's from a civilian POV.

Well to be fair Ventura was a Navy Seal as well and an Independent Governor in Minnesota. I would hope there was some sort of video footage.

Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura was NOT, nor was he ever, a Navy SEAL; though part of Underwater Demolition Team 12, he left the Navy 8 years before they were combined with the SEAL Teams, and SEAL status was not retroactive.
