Thanks CC.

I will give this a try if/when I can find some extra alcohol in the stores.

tip. do it in a ziplock bag. when it separates poke a hole at the bottom and let the water slowly drain out. when you get to the alcohol layer, invert the bag.

Drink twice as much? That will double your concentration.

On alcohol,

I've found the need to thicken it dilutes it. The concentration that is.

Conversely, If you dispense alcohol from the foam dispenser, you need less, it's harder to dry, which is good cause it actually makes you rub your hands longer.

So the alcohol lasts longer.

Im using perfume ethyl alcohol from ebay, much more available than Isopropyl.

I got one of these used canisters from work, works great...

And this is where i buy my Ethyl....190 proof

Buy this if you can find it and use any extra booze or sugarwater and yeast.. With a laboratory thermometer... The alcohol boils off at 78 -79 degrees.

Used one in my college dorm closet

I finally obtained two pints of 50% IPA (no, not India Pale Ale).

Added the salt and let it settle.

Worked very well, got about half back from the separation.

I took about 1 tablespoon of the purified alcohol and let it dry it a small bowl.
There were a few granules of salt that showed up once dry, but not much.

I did not have a siphon tube on hand but had a 5cc syringe that I use for applying adhesives on small projects.
That got most of the remaining alcohol out.

Thanks again OP.

Another good reason to use Lanolin + alcohol case lube

Lanolin is an emollient which is recommended over Glycerin in DIY hand sanitizer to lessen the harshness of the alcohol to the skin. My case lube is 15:1 alcohol to lanolin so still 96% alcohol by volume well over the 70% minimum suggested for disinfection. (EDIT: I use 99% isopropyl alcohol to start with)

Ethanol concentration can be increased by slowly freezing. This is typically done with hard apple cider (4-8% alcohol) to make apple jack (30-40% alcohol).

Feds consider such to be fractional distillation so watch out for "revenuers".

What are you guys all using the IPA for? I'm just curious. Perhaps to sterilize a site before insulin injection, etc?

In the hospitals, they typically use bleach for pretty much everything other than on the human body.

I am wiping out my fork and spoon at work for lunch, also wipe out coca cola cans. For everything else I am using UVC lights, Microban 24 Hours and disinfection wipes.

I had read that the alcohol kills the virus much quicker than bleach. I do not remember exactly how long the bleach was said to take, Between 2 and 3 min. While the alcohol is said to be able to destroy the virus in 30 seconds from passive contact and even faster if you are wiping or rubbing. Lysol I think can kill the virus but you would have to keep the surface 'WET' with the lysol for at least 10 minutes.

A note on the salt solution to concentrate the alcohol.
When I tried spraying some on my hands I noticed it felt different, it felt a bit slick, slippery. It seems that the alcohol does retain just a little bit of salt. I usually use the alcohol in a small spray bottle and spray down stuff like my mouse, keyboard, phone, door knobs etc. I notice that it leaves a very thin salt residue behind on surfaces. Not crazy about that but if you do not have the proper 70% min product then it is handy in a pinch.

I did the zip lock bag thing as well, I think that is about the best method.
