You want 40 miles of a GMRS radio without a repeater (and most GMRS radios won't work with a repeater)? Let me know how that works for you. There's a big difference between range for marketing purposes and in the real world.
I consider reliable range for GMRS to be 1-3 miles. |

Because some of us have tried those and while they may indeed attain a 40 mile range on the moon, they don't go a full two miles in the suburbs.

I am seeing that people arent getting but 1.25 miles on the ptt feature. How is it any better than a 2 me radio is what i am asking. I know the "40" mile exaggeration is pretty far fetched, but what is the difference that a person would see going from handheld radios, to ptt phones. Is there a real world benefit

These seem like cool toys but are simple handheld radios packaged as a cellphone. I would be much inclined to get a real dual band 2m/70 cm handheld that can handle open repeaters and simplex operation. The amount invested is negligible, but I wonder about the reliability of a device that is already 5 years old. Just don't think you are foig to get anything my j over a mile, while I've talked mobile to other states when the repeaters were chained together.

The various Nextel/Motorola phones are relatively cheap on eBay due to the world having switched to 'smart phones'. It's a product that may work for some yet might not be a solution for others. Last edited by hatidua; 12-17-2013 at 5:30 PM.. |

Educate me here. So the i335 or any phone devices with push to talk (PPT?) option will work, or can communicate with each other regardless of model?
Can military or police radios be able to communicate with holders of this phone if in case one gets lost in the woods? What advantage (besides the GPS mentioned by Jason) does this units have over the ordinary walkie talkies you can get at wally world? |

The FRS and GMRS radios have a place.
All these radios work by line of sight so due to the curvature of the earth range is limited to about 6 miles. The power will technically go 20-40 miles but 1 person would need to be on a mountain and able to see the other person- line of sight to hear them. You can gain altitude to get better range by going onto a roof top. In cities with building blocking line of sight, the range can be 1/3 mile to 2 miles. In practicality the license is not needed. The FCC has discussed doing away with the license fee and I found that they have fined 0 people for using the more powerful spectrum without a license. The big drawback to the FRS radios is crappy built in antennas. If one could have an external roof mounted antenna then the FRS would be much better in your local neighborhood to keep track of kids and others. For a few bucks you can go to the QRZ site, study the ham questions and get your ham license. Then the 2 meter and repeaters are a great option.

I just don't see the repeater idea as being viable, if SHTF how long are those powered repeaters actually going to stay online, once those go down (after the generator gas runs out) your 2/70meter will be useless wont it?

Well, those repeaters are lovingly erected and maintained by individuals or radio clubs. During the San Diego power outage in 2011, members of our club drove up to our repeater and were standing by with a generator in case the battery backup was exhausted.
But you're right--the best plan will not rely on repeaters never going down. |

They put out about 1/2 watt in Direct Talk, are line-of-sight propogation, and operate spread spectrum in the 900 mhz ism band. As far as advantages go...they are cheap, and offer a degree of privacy that the average Joe may not be able to defeat. However, this comes at the cost of interopability with those that do not have an old iDEN phone in their arsenal. Personally, I'm partial to having equipment that affords interop across all relevant local bands in a SHTF scenario (FRS, GMRS, MURS, Public Safety Systems, VHF/UHF Ham) |

Got a deal on a bunch of antennas for the i355's... I'll have them in a couple of days, and offer them up for what I paid.
I ran a distance test experiment between a pair of i355's, and i570's from my work. When in PVT mode, it'll tell you if the other person is in range or not. Through heavy industrial buildings and power lines, I got about 2000 feet from the i355's, and 2100 feet from the i570's. That surprised the heck out of me, I was expecting the i570's with their crappy little antenna to cut out first. this was going kitty-corner through all of the buildings, past light rail, and tons of stuff that should interfere. I'm planning a similar walking test from my house, dense suburbs, but not as steel-framed-building-heavy as my work area... then I'll do a in-the-woods kind of test and see just what kind of real-world range these have. I used to have a pair of "12-mile" radios that I got to communicate between the front office and back area of a machine shop, and the damn things couldn't get 100 feet when there was things in the way in a metal framed building. In any case... I'm having a lot of fun playing with these. |

NNTN5208 Remote Speaker Mic, probably as cheap as you'll find them (they are $180 from Sprint and they require 2-day shipping which brings the total to nearly $200ea)

HEY!! so i finally am back with my results..
got all 15 phones to work together in the channel settings. surprisingly got about a mile with 3 phones going through dense urban hilly area. which is really good considering almost nothing is flat in santa clarita for very long. got 4 with the longer antenna's and was able to push those to about 1.5 mi with the same settings as earlier. Fun little projects with some friends had us running around through neighborhoods and parks and never seemed to loose any ones connection. (8 of them in use) Sadly the seller i got the phones from didn't send the 15 chargers as stated...
