Hey, welcome to Calguns!

Maybe you'll get lucky and I'll shoot some black powder on range 3 and get the wind to waft it over to you guys. ;-)

Hi,

My good neighbor just told me that the (Chabot) April AS for 2015 is not on the schedule. I told him that more dates will likely be added as they are confirmed. And that's just how it is this time of year.

However, I also understand: “…the Board of Directors of the East Bay Regional Park District hereby authorizes staff to execute a Second Amendment to the Lease Agreement with the Chabot Gun Club, to extend the initial term for one year expiring on December 31, 2015…”

Do you have any comment at this time re: the likelihood of a 2015 April AS @Chabot ?

Thanks

That's interesting - usually Appleseed grabs even numbered months at Chabot and they have Feb but not April or June, then it picks up again with August, October, December. I hope somebody else didn't grab the summer months...

42 spots now

10/22 in 10 day lockdown.
USGI sling, swivels and Tech sights ordered.
500 rounds of various 22 ammo begged/borrowed/purchased - but I might have to deal with the resellers to get one kind.
Yoga mat stolen from wife.

Is there anything else I could find useful? Extra mags, any basic mods etc that would help a lot?

I'd get a chunk of carpet remnant from Home Depot. They're really cheap and in December it's really helpful to have a couple of layers between you and the ground.

If you get stuck for ammo PM me and we'll work something out. Switching types is going to change your zero a bit and it's going to get frustrating. Ideally you would run the ammo you have through the gun and break it in a bit and see which type it likes and try to get something in a similar velocity range.

I think it's handy to have a couple of extra mags just in case but you only have to have two. Make sure they both drop free easily.

You might Google the auto bolt release mod. Makes the bolt release like most rifles where you just pull back and let go. Or you can just buy the part http://www.midwayusa.com/product/928...se-ruger-10-22

Zero the gun as best you can at as close to 25 meters as you can manage. If you do it at 20 yards at Chabot maybe have them hitting a quarter inch below where you're aiming and you'll end up pretty close to point of aim = point of impact at 25. They'll cover zeroing in class but that'll get you pretty close.

Bring a teachable attitude and a nice lunch.

Great thanks! I was considering the auto release and have now ordered it. Hopefully I'll manage to get hold of one kind of ammo by then - at worst I'll order some more expensive stuff.

Would you recommend bringing my 17hmr rifle just in case with some cheap backup weaver mount iron sights or a red dot just in case I run into issues with the 10/22?

Never hurts to have a backup. With luck it will stay in the trunk. But I wouldn't switch unless the 10/22 is really giving you grief - it takes a while to rezero, get used to the new gun, etc. etc. and meanwhile it's hard to keep learning stuff.

Another note is that as an example my 10/22 likes to be run really wet - once it has a bunch of rounds through it, eventually it'll start having failures but then I can pretty much keep squirting in oil and it'll run forever. But they all have their own preferences so that's something that would be nice to work out ahead of time. Wouldn't hurt to have a rag and some q tips and some oil so you can muck it out a bit and add more lube on the fly if it's acting up...

Thanks! - I read the suggested equipment list earlier but this is exactly what I was after - I'll make sure to remember my cleaning kit, bore snake and some extra oil.

Sounds good. I was serious about the q tips though - in a pinch you can pull back the bolt and muck out everything you can reach and then add oil and rack the bolt a few times. It's not like a real cleaning but it takes 30 seconds and it rolls back the last two hundred rounds if you know what I mean.

Eljay's been doing some yeoman's work here while I was out of town -- thanks! The black powder might be just what I need to get moving on the 20th

Due to a scheduling conflict, the April and June Appleseed shoots will be special one-day events on Sunday. We're still working out what that will entail, so they're not on the main website yet (we may require previous attendance, depending on what we decide).

Foxbat, it sounds like you have the basics -- and Eljay had some good advice on the release and magazines. For equipment I second the official list linked above, though you can decide if a given item makes sense for you. Chabot is high and dry, so bring lots and lots of water. Unless it rains, in which case you can just bring lots of water

Happy to help. Any news about Metcalf KD shoots in 2015? I was intending to do one this year and the scheduling just never cooperated.

That's a good point about the water - I can't believe being dehydrated helps any with the standing position especially. One tip - there's a drinking fountain up by the main office. It doesn't do you any good during class - it's too far away - but if you're running low by lunchtime you might jog over there and refill one of your bottles before the history lesson gets going.

Thanks for the info on the April and June events.
Looks like I will use this opportunity to widen my horizons, and explore a range beyond a days travel. I will be escorting a few cooks that will need the full experience.

Cheers

I might want to do this. How down and dirty do you get with this class? As in, will my rifle look like it's been through a war zone after? I get that it's a firearm/tool and all, but I like to take care good care of it.

I just did it with my beloved 1956 Winchester 52C. Not even a scuff. You'll shoot a bunch of rounds. When you're not shooting the rifle will be sitting on your mat or carpet remnant or whatever it is you're using to not get bloody elbows. If it's raining it'll get at least somewhat wet, you might bring a towel to throw over it and put it away during lunch.

Now that being said the first time I did one I had the sling clip (the one you open up to adjust the length) up against the stock of my Ruger 10/22 and it scuffed it a bit. I now run it with the clip on the other side of my hand. It also took me a little while to realize that when you transport a rifle with a sling you want to either take it off or tighten it up so it's taut and move that same pesky clip down around the action somewhere where it can't rub against anything.

I should probably ask elsewhere but can anyone recommend a gunsmith in the east bay to drill/install the swivel studs for the sling? I don't have any tools at home

Might just be cheaper to buy a drill.

Yeah, you should be able to buy cheap-o corded drill and bits for under $20, and I've had those work good for years. Always good to have extra drills.

Just drill the hole a size between the solid shank of the screw and the screw's outer flukes and you should be fine. It should be med tough to screw in.

If you 'strip' the hole you can fill with a few whittlings of wood and some glue and re-install.

All done, 1st time at an Appleseed and unsupported shooting - results both better and worse than expected. Great team running it, wonderful participants and as always an outstanding range.

Another participant borrowed my 10/22 the second day and I used my Savage 17hmr bolt - probably a bad decision looking back. My 10 round mag had feed issues leaving me to rely on my 5, leaving only 5 shots at most in stages 2 and 3. The bull barrel may have perfectly slain my redcoat brethren and got the patch but after a few hours of use it got pretty rough.

I felt like this on 2 and 3 - got to work on that at home before the next one.

But all in all a wonderful event and now I have to prep for my next one

Your Savage just plain looks cool.

That's rough about the magazine. Looks like if you tighten up your standing and actually shoot ten rounds per stage you'll pretty much be there. The big trick for stages 2 and 3 is to get your NPOA and verify it quickly, and to do the transitions right the first time (but verify). Then you can really hammer it when you're ready to shoot. If you practice some, even in dry fire, it should go smoothly.

Glad you had fun!
