Default Re-inventing the.....axe?

as least as it relates to splitting firewood. You cold-weather guys will have to tell me -- is this guy just a technical master at wood-splitting, or is there something to his design?

http://www.vipukirves.fi/english/index.htm

Quote:
Upon hitting the top of the log and penetrating it slightly, the leading edge of the axe head begins to slow down. Where the axe blade widens sharply it stops the axe’s penetration. However, the mass of the axe head still has kinetic energy and the off line center of gravity forces it to rotate eccentrically down towards the wood. This rotational movement causes the leading edge, or sharp edge of the blade to turn in a lever action, forcing a split with all the force of the kinetic energy of the axe multiplied by the leverage of the axehead. The widening blade edge also has a benefit in that it helps to prevent the axe from penetrating into the wood and getting stuck there as is often the case with traditional axes.

The 1.9kg axe head has a significant amount of kinetic energy when it begins the rotational movement. While the centre of gravity of the head continues first to the right and then downwards the edge moves in a rotational direction to the left. This movement uses the rotational torque to split a log and push it away from the wood. In total the edge opens the wood by 8 cm. When the axe has rotated sideways it has used most of its energy and ends on top of the log on the in a sideways fashion. This safety feature ensures that the axe does not continue towards your legs and the axe remains totally in control. In addition, the axe holds the log steady on the chopping block ready for the next swing.

Would like to see him try it on some oak or something harder. The axe might be great but it looks like his wood is easy to split.

Looks like strait grained alder or poplar. It would make a nice kindling axe.

And, aren't the sections he's splitting frozen? Making it easier to split. Or, more likely, fracturing along the straightest point?

I don't split alot of wood so I don't know. Don't hate me!

Unique strike angle and not a branch running through any of them. I can appreciate the frozen approach.

BUT WAIT....if you order now we will double your order ....and include a free can of Flex Seal.

I have never split nor seen wood split with such ease beyond totally dry pine boards.

Possibly he is working in very sub-freezing temps which would be conducive to the wood shattering with less force applied then would be necessary to physically split it.

I agree. I think that wood has been drying for a few years. You can hear how brittle it is. I think if you dropped one of those logs off a 3 story building it would break into 100 pieces. Put a green oak log down and that video would be 2 hours long.

It isnt the axe..... it's the wood....

I could split it that easy with a hatchet from the looks of it...

having been on wood duty when we went camping for the last two years i can't believe this would happen in the summer. i think it has more to do with the temperature than anything else (and the wood).

Roselli Axe

I have the hatchet and like carrying it for hunting. It can be used as a Ulu for skinning and butchering.

Its a splitting maul made for splitting, he would have an easier time with a bungee cord wrapped around them. Also that is a very straight grained wood like polar. I have that tool and it works just that well.

So if I cut down a tree...is it ok to chop it and split it like this? Also are you suppose to dry it or something?

I buy pre cut would when I camp... So I'd like to know how to prep fore a camp fire from scratch. It wouldn't be a bad idea lol

This ^ I cut, bucked, split, stacked and burned 7 cords this last winter and won't waste my time with that. I have a maul and it works just fine, it should be noted that I love to split wood. All you have to do is know where to swing and know about the species of wood you're splitting and where to swing and its not difficult at all. Just my .02

It's the wood as much as any thing, straight grained dry wood is fun to split! try twisted or interlocked grained, half dry wood and it would bounce off. A tip for eucaliptas, split it within 24 hours of cutting or wait till dry.

the traditional axe is not given a run in this demonstration; something along the lines of The Pepsi Challenge would be appropriate. i'd like to see the demonstrator use a traditional axe on a stump like the one used in the demonstration, and in identical conditions.

Maybe strapping a weight on the side of a maul would achieve similar results?
