Default Help me determine the value of this AR

So here's the story: I have a motorcycle for sale listed on craigslist. My asking price is $2000 and I am pretty firm on that price. So far I have heard from lots of scammers and a few lookey loos.
Today I got a text from an individual who is offering to trade his AR 15 straight across for my motorcycle. He claims his AR is worth $3500 but he is willing to trade because he really wants a motorcycle. Now, I really need the cash so I can buy a car or truck for my commute, but if I can turn around and sell the firearm for $2500 or more, than I will do the trade.
Now, I am not an expert on ARs but I know that when I bought my first for $1400 during the panic, I over paid, and I knew it at the time and was okay with it. So I would assume a $3500 AR must be pretty special.
So, without further jibber jabber, here are the specs he sent me:

Mega Arms forged lower anodized black
Armalite lpk
polished hammer and disconnect
Magpul B.A.D. lever
Magpul ODG grip w/ beaver tail
Mako defense magwell grip/funnel
ATI milspec buffer tube and assembly
bushmaster 6 position collapsible stock
Stag Arms upper
Midwest industries barrel
Knights Armament flash suppressor
YMH free floated quad rail
lopro gas block
Magpul mbus 2
Magpul AFG
NCStar MKIII 3-9x42
2 30rd pmag rebuild kits

So I am somewhat unfamiliar with upper end ARs but I noticed a lack
of what I consider higher end manufactures on this gun (Noveske, Daniel defense, BCM, Aimpoint or eotech)

So, anyone else skeptical about the supposed $3500 value?

Probably need a few more details on the actual part models like the barrel. I'd say his 3500 is inflated, but I'm sure the AR gurus will give you a precise value.

He may have spend around $2500 if he paid what ever price he found first.

But that can be built for around $1800 to $2k

What it's worth is depending on who's buying and when.

Scare buyer.. Yea it can get $3k easy.

Real knowledgable buyer.. I'd say $1500 ish.

Give me the bike specs and your ad and ill let you know if its a fair trade.

Definitely not 3500 worth. Not even close to 2000.

I wouldn't pay more than $800 for that rifle....may have been worth $1200 at the top of the panic buying.

The Mega forged lower and the Stag upper are high/mid-high end grade products.

All the Magpul stuff adds up to about $200-$300.

NCStar scope is a lower end scope. It is worth about $90, but mine worked really well on my M&P 15-22 when I had it. I have no experience in using it on a full sized AR as I sold it with my 15-22. It does mount pretty securely and the glass was good enough to use in a darker indoor range. Not sure about how it'll hold up to the recoil of a .223 though.

In my experience with the AR, the most expensive parts of it are the barrel and the BCG. It doesn't appear he listed which bolt he is using and the barrel by Midwest Industry. I am unsure on the quality of the Midwest Industry barrels, but I have been considering their gas blocks.

The most expensive pieces it appears in the list are the upper and lower receivers come to about $500 total (weird as Mega don't sell their uppers seperated from their lowers unless it is a special Rifle Gear Aggressor Mega lower), where it is important to have a good fit, but aside from that, the barrel and BCG will affect accuracy more.

Honestly, to me, the rifle isn't worth more than $1600 and even then that is a generous offer for a used and fired firearm. For $3600, he better have a Krieger barrel matched to a Nickel Boron BCG with a complete mega upper and lower with a match trigger w/ atleast a $500 scope. At that price point, you are better off with a LaRue.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm probably not gonna trade. I can't drive and AR to work and I already have one to shoot. Well, I'm gonna head out to the Chico screening of Assaulted now. Hope to see some fellow Calgunners there!

I'd say you could probably build an AR like that for about 1800. It's not a 3500 AR by any means.

Won't flip for $2500, for sure. About a $900 rifle, generous estimate for insurance replacement purposes.

It doesn't appear to be a horrible gun, but to claim it is worth $3500 is just ridiculous. I have built MUCH nicer AR's than that with matched billet upper/lower, Daniel Defense barrel, and way too much to list for $2800. The guy who owns that is either trying to pull one over on you, or is a panic buyer who got swindled and is trying to get some money replaced.

He might and I mean might of spent 1400 building it but he made horrible choices on cheap products that don't hold any value. It's worth 800$ tops to a rookie buyer. That looks the gun that would be made if you went into the crap parts bin in any real ar guys house. Like all the leftover stuff you got on accident in trades that were lumped in with the one part you really wanted. I would refuse to do business with anyone who told you this a 3500$ value on principal alone. That person is an a hole.

I agree. I have home built 20+ AR15s. These are new prices, used take 25% off. You can buy a S&W MP15 for less.

The prices everyone has posted for those parts could be haved or more in many of the cases if you found them in the for sale forum. It would be a fun challenge to see who could build that gun for the cheapest. I think I could do 600$ in two months with a little help from calguns.

The bottom line is this is a franken build, even with nothing but primo parts they suffer a lot compared to what they cost to build.
Often they make more sense to part out, either way you cut it though it does not add up to 2500

It's a mishmash parts gun. The parts are OK but it's still a parts gun. I don't buy used very often, I build my own. I can't say I'd have interest in the gun at all. The Mega lower is cool but I rather have a mil-spec lower. The other parts are just parts, not bad parts but nothing special. I'm thinking 800 max to a buyer that just has to have it. Lowballers would offer 600.

Most saavy gun buyers would not want someones project, or build. Simply not impressed with the part selection. Plenty of "flags" here, the inflated price is one of them. "Polished hammer/discon." who did that? Billybob? Jethro?

That doesn't even look like a mega forged lower. Looks more like a seekins billet lower but it's not a seekins either. Definitely not worth $3500, I wouldn't even give him $1000 for it.

That is about a $1200 build new in current times. Won't sale for more then $900 in the market place. With the market place so flooded right now with ARs and all of these manufacture cranking out all these ARs you will see a high quantity of supply and a low demand in the next several months. You will start seeing all these Frankenstein ARs at the end of this year for dirt cheap and no one would want to buy it.

Nowhere close to 3500. Its a mish-mash of parts that are average. Really the cheapie NCStar scope should have said it all.

Its a franken build. assuming it wasnt his first time assembling (it probably was considering the parts selected) and it functions correctly i would say its a 800-900 gun. maybe a little more if he parts it out. dont waste your time

LMAO that rifle is not worth $3500. For that price you are looking at a LWRC, LaRue or other high end stuff. We got a lot delusional people who thinks their rifle is worth the sum of their parts at retail plus tax plus emotional attachment.

+1. The resell market for home built ARs is limited. Ripoff, don't do it!

Also take that pic down with the loaded 30 round mag! Not worth you or him getting in trouble.

I don't even think that AR would of sold for $3500 during the panic. You can probably build a new one just like that with optics today for under $1200

now if it was a H&K mr556 or a mr762 a scar 16/ 17 they are worth 3 grand +
but that's a POS and a complete rifle of just any brand off top my head is worth more then a frankenstien AR.

Yup, tell him to get lost. That is a $1500 (panic price) AR at best. Keep your motorcycle unless he ponies up the other $600
