National Guard
Any National Guard guys here? I'm just trying to get a handle on what it's like. I know the 40th ID is here. What do you grunts in the NG even do? PM me if you're a recruiter. The ones in offices seem to work 5 hours a week or something...

It varies greatly on who you are and what you do. There a vast variety of units, especially here in California, not just the 40th. We have two MI battalions, aviation wings, 79th INF, 19th SFG, etc...Most people in my unit put on a uniform two days a month and two weeks out of the year and that's all they ever do. Then we have our full time AGR guys that work regular 8 hour days in the office, five days a week taking care of all of our between drill administrative and organizational stuff. You have those who are technically national guard, but are performing some other variety of active duty type orders or are on deployment.
You get out of it what you put into it, and it can be a lot more flexible than active duty, but it has its downsides as well. I'm National Guard, but I have spent approximately 2/3rds of my enlistment on some form of orders or another- I haven't held a civilian job in a few years now.

19K with C Trp. 1/18 CAV 1993-1998, and 96B with C Co. 223 MI Bn 1999-2003.
It's a part time job, but depending on the job there are a lot of deployments these days.
