Default Compact/Youth shotgun with short LOP and synthetic stock

I'm looking for a shotgun for my wife. My Benelli Supersport has a LOP that is too long for her and she has found it difficult to mount and shoot.

I'm looking for a semi-auto shotgun with a short length of pull (12" LOP types) with synthetic stock for her. Wife hates wooden stock, actually she hates wood, period (no wood stuff in the car, most home furniture and guns allowed....).

So far I've only come up with Weatherby SA-08 Synthetic Youth and Franci Affinity Compact.

Does anyone know of other shotguns I should look into? Thanks.

Something in the 12" LOP range. There are some in the 13" LOP range which I think will be too long for my wife. It is unfortunate really, because a Benelli M2 Synthetic would fit the bill nicely.

Thanks for the offer, really appreciate it. Unfortunately I live in the SF Bay Area. However, there's a Sporting Clay range close by, Coyote Valley, that also rents shotguns. I'm planning a trip there this Sunday to let my wife try out some.

Benelli is offering the M2 field in a compact package.

All the major shotgun manufacturers make youth stock models, some with spacers to adjust length, and there is always the Hogue overmold if they have it for your firearm as well.

I recently got my wife a Weatherby SA-08, and while it is not synthetic, I can tell you it is a great gun, and fantastic for the price. Over 400 rounds and not a single issue of any kind. Cycles flawlessly, low felt recoil, and flat shooting. She loves it, and I enviously "barrow" it as much as she'll let me.

Thanks for the info, good to know this. Did the Weatherby require any sort of "breaking in" before it will cycle target loads?

Also, was it a 12g or 20g? Thanks again.

The SA-08 we got is a 20ga, and shot 7/8 oz, 7-1/2 shot at 1250 fps right off the bat with the light load gas valve in it.

While only time will tell how it holds over the years, for her first gun and as much as she shoots, it was the better choice for us than other (remarkably similar) guns costing several hundred dollars more.

If the barrel's the right one, how about just getting another stock?

Of course she might not like hand-me-downs.

I think Benelli has a compact combo gun (Montefeltro?)

My wife likes her Beretta AL391 Urika Youth model in 20ga. I load some really light target loads for her, it cycles everything like clockwork.

She is 5'1" and weighs about 100lbs soaking wet with rocks in her pockets. I will go down and measure it tomorrow, but if I recall the LOP on that gun is more like 13".

You sound like you already know this, but just in case, 12" is pretty short LOP. If she tries one that short, make sure she keeps her thumb off the pistol grip (basically down the line of the stock) first few shots, just in case. A bloody nose always makes for a bad first impression.

For the money, I would skip the Beretta Youth Model and get the Weatherby (which is basically the same gun.)

Good luck, have fun.

Thanks good to know this. I'm very suspicious about shotguns that owners claims to "cycle everything after breaking it in", I really prefer shotguns that I buy works correctly out the box. And it sounds like Weatherby does.

Thanks for the info on Beretta, I'm heading out to Coyote Valley this weekend and hopefully they'll have either the Weatherby or the Beretta in the Pro Store. Or, even better if they have those available for rent.

And yes, my wife's similar in height and weight; 5 feet 4 and 107lbs. Not exactly "American sized".

Yeah, just came back from Reed's indoor range and they had one in the store too. Unfortunately, my wife has this weird thing against wood stock and insists on synthetic ones. Women...can't understand them, they'll ignore a $1300 Benelli shotgun because it has wood stock and prefers a $480 Weatherby one with synthetic stock instead. I guess I save money that way.

One caution regarding a synthetic stock...synthetic stocks can weigh less than wood and a lighter gun has more felt recoil than a heavier one.

Hmm- you'll have to piece it together but:

Find a base 12g rem 1100 with a 26" rem choked barrel (or a standard weight frame 20g)
Go to jackweststocks.com and have your wife take a look at the synthetic adjustable comb stocks they have (also avail with a carbon fiber finish) - they can cut the stock down for you -

Piece it together And you have something like this:

http://www.trapshooters.com/noframes...hreadid=206638

Synthetic, adjustable (esp if you throw an adjustable buttplate on there), lower recoil (esp with a ken rucker bump buster) established design, Parts availability, etc

I got my wife the weatherby SA-08 synthetic youth. It has been perfect and has cycled everything, even the Fiocchi trainer loads. Part of this is their design (which I actually prefer). Instead of trying to make one action work for everything, they have two interchangeable piston cylinders. Use the light one for light loads, the heavy one for heavy loads. To switch pistons takes only a minute.

LOP is 12 1/2, so very close to your requirement. My wife is pretty small herself, at 5'1". We found that 12 1/2 is a little on the short side. I installed a slip on recoil pad which adds another 1/2" and now it's perfect for her.

I shoot at Coyote Valley all the time -- would be happy to meet up and let you guys try it. drop me a PM if interested.

I checked my wife's Beretta AL391 Urika Youth model and the LOP is just over 13".

Again, if it were me, I would go for the Weatherby, great value.

Thanks, I'll take you up on the offer on day. I went there today, and got my butt handed to me by some of the sporting clay stations. Man, those clays are VERY fast compared to trap and their curving angles really frustrated me. I think it isn't so much the speed but the angles that really kills me, I can hit the rabbits pretty well but even slow ones with weird angles took me a lot of shells to even hit one.

I signed up as a member too, so I'll be heading there as many Sundays as I can until I get better.
