Default Advise On Cottontail Hunting Around Lancaster

Iím a new shotgun owner and interested in hunting Rabbits. I see them within city limits of Rosamond all the time, but I donít where to go to legally hunt them. Any advise would be appreciated. I donít need your secret hunting spot, just the name of an area

Cotton tails can be hunted with a pellet rifle in the yards of Rosamond all right.

Does Dept. Fish and Game (Or whatever they are called today.) list hunting areas on their website? I believe they do.

Best to you OP. You will find a place in the AV to hunt.

Upland game & HIP (Harvest Information Program) stamp have as much to do with hunting rabbits as a Federal DUck stamp does.

Head to the base of he mountains just WNW of you and put on the miles. Cottontail tend to like big rocks & rock piles along with tight brushy spaces the most. Jacks are everywhere, but especially in areas with softer sand are sparser brush for some reason. This time of year the absolute best advice you can get is to look in the shadows!!! This was talked about, and I posted a bunch of pictures in this section explaining exactly what I mean.

Be careful, it's hot out there. And don't forget that you can't use lead for them anymore in anything but an airgun.

I have a hunting license and even the stamp for upland games. I just have never been able to catch anything. It was my own fault, I used to own a 22LR prior to the shotgun.

If I sit quietly in the horse corral after feeding him, and our dog stays away (rare), I can pet the wild cottontails.
The dog once caught a rabbit in the corral. The horse made her drop it and it ran off.

What are your plans for the rabbits you harvest.

Thank you for the recommendation, but those seem to be private land. Have you hunted on those land? If you have I would love to get in touch with the owners and get permissions from them.

Just a reminder, if you go back to your .22, its lead free ammo also. And as was mentioned, lead free for shotgun. Don't have any lead rounds on you at all in case you get stopped by a warden.

I no longer own that rifle. I prefer the shotgun, more flexibility.

Do you work with CA Fish and Game? If you do, can you please tell everyone what are the requirements for legally hunting cottontails and jacks in LA, Ventura and Kern county? I currently have the harvest and upland stamp. What else do I need?

The area of Kern county north of Rosamond is not legal for shooting west of the freeway; at least they used to have signs up around there. Otherwise, plenty of places to hunt near you. For true peace of mind, head up the 14, take the turn towards Johannesburg just past Jawbone Cyn and hunt the washes and such on the left side of the highway.

If he does work for DFG we are all doomed. You need a current CA hunting license & nontoxic shot or lead free ammo. Period. That is it. Disregard the ignorance above.

I retract my statement ...I looked it up and there is no mention of an upland game stamp to hunt rabbits. I automatically buy one each year

Sorry for the misinformation

Ya...the printed validation took the place of the stamp.

Not required for resident small game.

If you want the actual waterfowl or upland stamp, you can request one on the F&W website and they'll send them to you after the season.

Awesome OP! Thanks for the follow up. Itís not too often we have new posters come back and share photos of their success. That looks good. It has me thinking of making something like a vindaloo out of some cotton tail.
