looking for a scope for my m1a I'll be using to hunt this season. this is my first high powered rifle and I have no idea what kinda scope I need. I do plan to be roughly 3 to 400 meters out. any advice is welcome.

These are great they are Mil/Mil and Front Focal Point. Similar scopes are $600+ Dimitri

If you want a variable scope, the Super Sniper is a real good deal, FFP, good glass, reticle, dials, etc.
http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-3-9x42-Tacti...pe-P50716.aspx Make sure to get a good mount as well, Sadlak makes a nice one. Please note that M1A's are hard to scope because of lack of cheek weld.

You picked a pretty heavy rifle for hunting. As a beginner you have no business shooting 400meters at game in MY opinion. Having hunted for many years I still try to get close even with pronghorns.
I have the Sadlak mount and like it better than my 3rd gen Springfield mount. A 3X9X40 or 3.5X10X40 NON-AO scope is very good. I only use Leupold on my BG hunting rifles and most are 3X9X40. I have taken pronghorn at over 600 yards with the Leupold 3X9X40 and on my 25-06 a 3.5X10X40. I am headed to Africa in April and we are taking 2 Leupold 3X9X40 rifles and one 3.5X10X40 rifle with shots estimated out to 350 yards. I know they will do the job if we do ours.

Leupolds hunting line of scopes are nice. They make some variable power scopes with the bdc hash marks built in. I cant remember the model of mine but i bought it new around $700. And I agree with divernhunter! Hunting is about stalking in close to your prey. That's the test of true skill. Any trigger monkey can drop big game at a distance. Best of luck!
