Default Has anyone managed to DROS a stripped AR receiver in 2014?

Just curious what the experience was like.

Nothing different. Just takes longer when you buy multiple lowers

And what did they put down for barrel length and caliber in the DROS?

I am asking about stripped receivers, not functional rifles.

Just like any other year...DROS, 10-day wait, pick up.

- There's a box for "Frame/Receiver Only" which the LGS marked "Yes"

- For "Barrel Length", they left it blank

- For "Caliber", they marked "0000"

Yes, I have.

I bought a 1930ish Fox side by side and a 1950s Western Field .22 rifle on the same Dros.
Both didn't have serials.

I don't know what the FFL put in the field for serials.

I picked them both up last week.

I just picked up two stripped lowers on April 8, and the transactions took about 40 minutes (not including the 10 day waiting period) including waiting for other customers. The DROS forms were marked as above. No different than purchasing bare bolt action rifle receivers.

Indeed. It's exactly like buying a handgun has always been, except you can generally only buy a single handgun at a time (unless PPT). So you don't notics what a hassle it is.

Last month I asked my FFL to toss three stripped lowers into the deal when I was DROSing a couple of rifles, just like I always used to do. I won't be doing that anymore. Five thumbprints, five signature, 45 minutes.

There isn't anything different.

The process to buy a rifle and handgun is the same, previously only handguns were registered.

so its the same process, the payment and paperwork depends on how fast the guy behind the counter is, and you get a 10 day wait unless your name comes up similar to someone prohibited then it will take additional days to match your name to address. Now if your name is john doe, I suggest to add your social security number on the form so its faster for them to verify the right person.

The SSN goes on the federal form (4473), which is not submitted to the CA DOJ as part of the DROS. There is no advantage to doing this in CA, since the DOJ handles the entire background check. There is the downside that the 4473 sits at the FFL for at least 20 years and that information can be used for identity theft, particularly involving financial dealings.

The experience is just like buying any other rifle.

You pick out the one you want, we go to the back, get a new one, bring it to the front counter, and write it up.

It's actually very different now. Specific details of the rifle, including S/N, make, model, caliber, etc, have to be recorded. There is a separate DROS form for each firearm, with a separate signature and thumbprint.

If you are buying a single lower, it's not so noticeable. But if you want to buy several at a time, as I used to be in the habit of doing, it can be a real headache.
