Default Well that was horrible(mauser bolt re-assembly)

Long winded story that I hope I don't experience again lol:

I watched a vid from "Iraqveteran8888" on how to disassemble & reassemble a Mauser(looks like a 98) bolt and aside from just unscrewing the cocking piece/firing pin, etc. I didn't know how to disassemble beyond that. I..didn't know you had to have the thing cocked. I either didn't have it cocked or I de-cocked by flipping the safety a diff. way. Finally got all the gunky cosmoline off and it looks nice! Didn't know there were numbers on the bolt, cool! That matches as well Couldn't reach into the bolt housing to get all the gunk out of there, I'll have to find something for the job.

Anyways, I didn't keep the safety in the 2nd, upright position when dropping the cocking piece back in. After screwing it in wrong all the way, I noticed the safety's weren't working properly when I put in the rifle. 3rd(safety off) position worked fine but the 2nd position, the bolt wouldn't pull back and I couldn't put it all the way on safe. I couldn't unscrew the thing for THE longest time..I was so worried it was permanent & I'd have to order a new or old non-matching parts for my rifle Or that I'd have to spend money on having a gun smith look at it. Played around for a very long time with the safety so it didn't catch into the grooves of the bolt. Re-watched his vid to see how he put the thing back in but I couldn't get it right. Found another vid that showed that the safety HAD to be up and I ended up with the cocking piece cocked! Cool! Dunno if I did that on purpose or not. It's now clean, nice and shiny! Ready to go back in the rifle. I want to try it again but I've wasted an hour and 30 minutes already Oh, and when lowering the bolt shroud to toss in the cocking piece, I couldn't hold down and it bit me

Goodnight lol

Haha! Been there done that; it sounds like me years & years ago.

It gets easier. Infact, now I could probably disassemble & reassamble a Mauser bolt with my eyes closed in a matter of minutes.

Practice makes perfect.

I first did it just to see how it was done but since I had it diassembled, thought I'd go to the garage and clean off that cosmoline. I took it all apart in my room on top of the dresser. The first attempt compressing the spring for re-assembly, I accidentally let go and the cocking piece, safety and spring flew away hahah. A sign of bad times to come.

You are now officially a Mauser owner!
Anyone who owns a Mauser, and has never done this is:
A: Lying
B: Never taken their bolt apart

Jeff did a great pictorial on SR to fix this:

Hahah, thank you! Nice guide there. I have no clue how I cocked it by just putting the cocking piece in...I keep seeing people pulling on the thing and flipping the safety on.

Haha. Guilty! Within minutes of recieving my k98 from the ups guy, I decided to disassemble the bolt without leaving it in the first safety position.. I almost cried...
