Canon 85mm f/1.2 L - King of the Bokehs? (No 56k)
I figured I'd start a thread for discussion on this legendary piece of plastic, metal, and glass. I will start by using conversation from another thread which we took off topic (sorry about that!).
If you have any pics and experiences to share regarding the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L series lens, feel free to contribute! ------ Quote:
Uhh yeah man you are not kidding. So, I'm being honest here.. that depth of field at 1.2 is no joke when you are closer to its minimum focus distance. You will probably need to change the focus screen to a precision screen like I did. Also if you can back away from the subject (and if the subject isn't moving too much) you can nail it most of the time. It's definitely alot of heavy glass, and if you're focusing from minimum to infinity, it's slow as molasses. But you never really do that in practice, unless sports photography and in that case this is not the lens to use. Usually though in my experience, you get used to paying attention to how far your subject is away from you and by the time you hit focus button you're already almost bang on. I do sometimes have to stop it down to 2 or 2.8 on bright sunny days because the shutter on my 6D is only 1/4000sec. Just like anything man once you spend some time with it you will figure out how to make it work for you and when you do nail it, you cream your pants. I bought mine used actually (eBay), 2015 date code too from a guy named dan_912 or something like that from Sacramento. I've purchased many from him and he is super good, and goes the extra mile to take care of you. Sell all your Glocks and go get one! Last edited by spoon01; 05-28-2016 at 9:51 AM.. |

Do you think the AF on this lens would be any easier with the focus system on the 5d Mk3? I also have a 6d and went with the 24-70 2.8L ii to photograph our first kid.
Did you decide on this lens over the 50mm 1.2? |

Can't go wrong the the 24-70 2.8 L... I was on the fence between that and the f/4 version. Went with f/4 because IS and macro and I already had the 50 f/1.4 and really at that time I think I wanted to save money lol. Having a Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4, and the Canon 24-70mm f/4 L had the 50mm base already well covered. Maybe one day I will spring for the 50mm f/1.2 L, but being I had 50mm well covered I decided on the 85mm. I have been very satisfied with it, it's one of the things I have that I probably will never sell for the rest of my life. I get like that with some stuff. |

I have the 85mm f/1.2 and it is a gorgeous lens. But it isn't my favorite. My favorite is Canon's EF 200mm f/1.8 lens. Even with a 1.4X or 2X extender, the 200 is amazing. I bought mine over 25 years ago for $2,750 used and could sell at a serious profit even today. It's that good!
Check out some equipment reviews at fredmiranda.com. Good info there.

When I had all my Nikon film gear, I used to lust after this lens. 200mm f2.0. The front element is 160mm! They cost a small fortune, that's if you can find one.

How are you liking the 70-200 2.8? Is it the Mk i or ii?

I sold my 85 f/1.2L a couple years ago. I just never used it much. It is definitely a lens you'll use to get a really specific look.
Focal length:85 mm Max lens aperture:f/1.2 Exposure:1/1250 at f/1.2 Flash:Not fired, compulsory mode Exposure bias:0 EV Exposure mode:Manual Exposure prog.:Manual ISO speed:ISO 100 I just rely mainly on my 70-200 f/2.8L IS II for portraits. That being said, I would like another 85. I thought about getting the Sigma. Friends of mine have the Sigma 85 ART lens on both the Canon and Nikon systems, and everyone is quite happy with it.

I've used a 105/2 DC for models and it was very very creamy indeed. I've used Sigmas from school's loan pool, and while descent, they aren't great. I've never been blown away by Sigma like Nikon or Canon's flagship stuff. |

I want one of these Russian lenses! I also shoot with a Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 and get similar swirly bokeh results, but nothing quite matches the swirlyness of Russian glass.
Nice photos! |

I was thinking of picking up a 105 or 135. What I really need is a 70-200/2.8..surprised I've made it this long without that staple glass. If I could only stop buying guns.

Didn't see this until now, I have the first gen. It is a fantastic lens, the MKII is even better. They are definitely some of Canons best efforts.

Le sigh... I was really trying to avoid justifying the purchase of another camera lens for my 6D but that Helios is just so damn tempting

Here are a couple recents from my Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4. She doesn't get much use nowadays..manual focus and all. Plus it's not the sharpest lens wide open, but I still enjoy the character.
