I remember the first time I heard about the CSMR. I was teaching a class at Camp parks and had a CW2 in my class with California instead of U.S. Army. I was about to pull him aside and lay into him when my CO walked in and let me know we had state reserve in the class, and had to explain it to me. Needless to say they were all pretty cool guys (as I realized there were more than one).

The first time I saw CALIFORNIA instead of ARMY on a set of ACUs it threw me for a loop. Couldn't help but stare and then ask the guy a bunch of questions. He seemed kind of annoyed to have to explain it (probably for the 100th time that day). They need a better press agent.

For NoonandA - our SgtMaj (or SGM in Army / NG / SMR parlance) is a 30-year retired jarhead. It took alot to muster up the strength to put on the Beret, but thankfully it's pretty much gone except for the Special Forces crowd (who earned it).
We also have a retired CW5, some Frog and Cobra pilots, etc.

Great program. Never worked with them when I was in the military but run into them at gun shows and bases occasionally. Amazing they volunteer to do all this. Heard they get some pretty cool training as well.

Did someone say cool training??
#1 - repelling out of Black Hawks to conduct disaster Search / Rescue missions, #2 - Small Arms Training Teams (SATT) - training with local, regional law enforcement on weapons proficiency, #3 - Military Police, Security Forces (SECFOR) and even Opposing Forces (OPFOR), #4 - Nurse / EMT spots, #5 - Communications (mobile HMMVW's), #6 - Train / qualify NG and Air NG troops on M-9, M-4, M249, M240 and larger weapons for overseas deployments, #7 - Officer Candidate School, #8 - Crash / Rescue Fire Depart at JFTB Los Alamitos Air Station, #9 - Chaplain Corps & assistants, #10 - Judge Advocate General (JAG) and staff, #11 - Recruiting (air shows / car shows / gun shows / Laker Girls / Hollywood, NASCAR, Grand Prix, Emergency Prep shows), #12 - S-1 Admin (yeah, it's getting less sexy but some might prefer this), #13 - S-3 Operations, #14 - S-4 Logistics, #15 - Drive HUMMVEEs, 2-ton, 5-ton and sometimes other cool vehicles, #16 - Training Cadre for all the above & more coming. Rarely is it a dull moment if you join up. Read more here: http://www.calguard.ca.gov/CSMR/Docu...REVISIONv5.pdf And feel free to reply / ping / PM me with questions. I'm currently a nasty girl. (at least that's what my drill sergeant calls me.) I was really confused when I first saw a SMR at our armory. Me and my buddy couldn't figure out why they have a california name tape instead of USArmy, and we didn't want to look like a couple of douchebags by going up to them and ask. I've never heard of CSMR but now I know.

Buckshot - Virtually every SMR unit has a TDA line / slot for nurse / EMT / Combat Life Saver (CLS). In Recruiting we use the nurses as part of the health screening during our mini MEPS Orientations. Heck - my CO is a retired Army nurse corps officer. Disaster response is part of our mission, and we are working to get all soldiers and airmen Military Emergency Management System (MEMS) certified (think FEMA or CERT), and now there is a push for CLS too. People with medical training are in HIGH demand.
@ Wicked - over half our mission is training or assisting the NG for their mission, the remainder is coordinating with local, county and state agencies for natural or man made disasters. There's lots to do and when it comes, I fear it will make Katrina or Sandy look like a picnic in the park. Snickering at Yenhan...I was in the same boat trying to figure out the Nasty Girl thing....until I read all of your post, saw the armory mention (duh - NG) and put 2+2 together. Thanks for your service sister! Merry Christmas! |

Thanks for the heads up on that NG lingo Gunner! 3 years in the SMR you'd think I'd have picked up on that by now.
As for the helmet - I can certainly ping a few of the soldiers in the 2/2 MP unit based in SDG. Perhaps they can use it....as I still have an elderly PTSG. |

We're up to nearly 1,500. We've doubled in size since I came in (thanks Capo and those recruiters). Another 1,500 to go! I need to get that Discovery Channel TV show for the SMR going soon....

Damn, if weren't for being an insulin dependent diabetic with three heart attacks and 6 stents, I would sign up now. This sounds like a great way for someone to serve your local community and California as a whole. Thanks to those who serve.

I've been in the CSMR for 2 years. Never handled a firearm from the armory, unless you in a SECFOR unit it's not going to happen. Repelling out of Black Hawk's isn't true either. The 160th Aviation, no longer has a relationship with the SMR. The C.O. that did left. Last edited by Cactuscooler; 02-05-2015 at 7:56 AM.. |

Hi Cactus,
Not sure what unit your with, or where your informations comes from. I'm in recruiting, and have been doing this job over 4 years, and two of my training courses had weapons qual. And I can tell you that multiple units conduct weapons training on a regular basis (Bravo, SATT, SECFOR (ISC), SMP and the 146th. And I'm happy to call the 1SG or LTC to validate the forward mission parameters of the Civil Support (S&R) unit. Regarding saluting SMR soldiers, yes. All federal branches have regulations requiring one to salute individuals wearing officer rank. Within CA and when not on title 10 orders, CANG soldiers rank with / among CSMR soldiers. |
