Just curious, I applied for Detention Services Officer under last years opening in 2012 and barely completed my poly 3 weeks ago (was told I passed by the examiner). As of now I have yet to be scheduled for the medical or psych. My question is will my application from last years DSO opening carry over even though a new DSO announcement has been posted for 2013? (Note that I have yet to fail any portion of the bg investigation). I'm just worried that I may be stuck in the black hole club. Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Received disqualification letter
Received DQ letter June 20th for DSO. I appealed letter right away. The letter stated that I was DQ because of past conduct. In 1996 I was arrested for Domestic Violence(misdeamenor) I was never convicted and the case was dismissed. My boyfreind at that time was convicted and sent to prison. I have never been in any trouble since then. I revealed the situation from day one. I also did my polygraph medical and psych. What are my chances of an appeal?

Each appeal is reviewed independently. It would be difficult to tell you your chances without being able to see everything that the background investigators reviewed. If something is an anomoly, they will dig a little deeper to see if there is more to the situation. Good luck

Update. Had my background investigation interview of 6/22/13. I was scheduled to take the polygraph yesterday (7/10/2013) which I was told I passed by the polygraph examiner. I was contacted early this week for me to be schedule for the psychological written exam and the psychological verbal board exam for the end of this month. Lets see what happens now.

Any of you that are applying for DPO I, I highly recommend that you also apply for Detention Services Officer. The applicaiton is closing tomorrow 7/19/13. It is always best to process with both because sometimes we have a higher need for one verses the other. Once you get your foot in the door, other opportunities become available as well. here is the link:
https://sjobs.brassring.com/11033/AS...5&jobid=171641 plus, if you already applied for DPO I, your online applicaiton is already saved in the system and its just a matter of clicking on the link above, logging in, and hitting next about a a dozen times and submit. our current class only had 24 folks make it thru backgrounds and out of those, only 3 were DPO I's. 17 were DSO's, so you see where the higher likelyhood is for someone to start with the department. Good luck to everyone.

Probably will because many of them will drop in background. I am not sure about improving your score thou.

That score is final until you expire off of the list next year. Once you expire and the application is open again, you can go througth the process again and hopefully get a better score. They will still process you as band 2 but all of the V band and band 1 folks must be processed first. So depending on where they are on the list, you may continue the process soon or perhaps several months from now. Good luck.

Most are denied, I have only known of two that were overturned. Both were dq's for failing the psych. The applicant was able to go to another psych that cleared them. I know of no others besides those two.

Whole new testing. On another note, it looks like they may go to band 2 on the previos testing sol some of you that were in band 2, may still get processed. Just remember that if it is over a year from when you received your banding letter that you automatically expire.
I was told that they may open them again in a month or two depending on how many get dq in the initial written testing. Ill keep you all up to date. Good luck. |

The final steps are the psych writte exam, psych oral interview and the medical.
The psych written is actually two tests. The first part is the MMPI exam. I believe its called the minnisota multi phasic personality inventory. You can look it up on the internet. The second part is a county exam on truthfulness. The results from the test are sent to the psych for review and then you have a sit down interview with the psych. They will ask you about all aspects of your life. Very intrusive but it is part of the process. The medical is a standard medical exam, vision, hearing, chest xray, etc. Depending on your history, you may go thru a stress test on the treadmill. |

Depending on your specific situation, you may process quickly or it may be slow. When I first applied for the department it took me 14 months to be offered the job. I know of others that have processed in three months. It really all depends on you. For example, if you placed at 96 on your oral, then everyone above you goes first. If we continue to complete oral interviews, then the newer people that scored above 96 will bump those from the older list. Another issue may be that your former employers may have been sent letters and they have not returned them yet. This will slow the process down. As I've stated before, you can politely call the exam unit to ask for an update. But if you are calling repeatedly, your application may be dropped. An attribute that is appreciated by all departments is patience. If a person does not have that trait, they will not make it very far in law enforcement.

Update. Had my psy written exam on 7/25/2013. Had the psy verbal exam on 7/31/2013 which I passed as according to the doc there. Had my physical exam today. Physician said that I should be fine and that it now depends on the county. Lets see what happens now. Oh yes, there were about 6-7 applicants for the physical exam today. There was no running on a treadmill. On a funny note, the "actual" physical exam took about 25-30mins but had to wait about 2 hours in the waiting room before the medical staff called me in.

Its sounds like your done. All the reports need to be turned in and then a final quality control review is completed. After that you get the call. Next class starts on October 10. Good luck and hope you get the offer. Start working out now

I have a question. I know someone who applied for the DSO position that closed on July 19 and is going to take the written test by August 9th. Around how long should the hiring process take from there on out, and how often do you start academies? I have heard that the hiring process takes months and sometimes a year or more.

The process is different for everyone. I know of a few people that processed in a little under 3 and a half months. Others have waited over a year. It really depends on many different factors such as where you scored on the interview to how many different jobs you've had and how many times you've moved. I believe a good average is approximately 8 months. We have two more academies scheduled this year, october and december. After that we will not have an academy until april of next year.
