My brother and I were being highly selective until we got scared of shooting too many sprig, then we just finished off with teal. I limited with 2 sprig, 1 gadwall, 1 wigeon, 1 spoony, 2 teal. I wish the limit on sprig was higher because I could have limited on sprig in 30 minutes. The first time I’ve been frustrated to see so many sprig.

Ya. I’m hunting at a private club in the grasslands. A buddy of mine got 7 teal in about 40 minutes at a really small private club that he and his family own.

Went out last week thursday, By 10AM saw only 3 ducks which were so nice and agreed to come home with me.
Went today and took my fishing rod with me. Not a single duck but brought a nice sturgeon home. Don't know what is better

First weekend with water at the blind. 1 speck. Didn’t shoot the 3 ducks that came by as it was a lil before shoot time. This 80 degree weather sure does bring out the skeeters but not the ducks.

Opener was slow.. lots of Gadwall.. I managed 3 Gaddy, 1 Wood Duck, 1 Sprig, 2 teal. On Sunday I managed to get a couple teal. My blind mate got a speck as we were leaving the blind.

I went out the 2nd Tuesday after the opener.. I could have blasted spoonies and gadwall.. but held out.. Managed to down a single speck.

High temps and no weather sucks.. I likely will not go out until I see some fog or another high wind/stormy day.. for the next 2 weeks it looks like "Wind light/variable" and 70's. No point in going for that.

Yesterday, 2 sprig, 1 mallard, 1 teal and a speck. Lots of sprig but couldn't shoot as already had a limit.

Being cautious as well and not shooting at higher birds due to the wind. I don't have a dog and a sailed bird would be a bear to try and retrieve.

Doing ok. Double on a pair of mallards and 5 woodies. 20 mins.
Two buddies with me both limited on woodies. About the same amount of time.
Without my dog we would have been screwed. Pond was deep. He did his job on all 21 birds.

7 spoonbills today.... and all drakes, to boot. That's all we really saw..... and they were everywhere. There were also some Widgeon's in the air, but they were cruising at altitude and never came close enough to shoot at.

Looks like I'm making duck/bacon burgers tonight.

a limit of mature plumage cock spoons is quite a feat.

Eastern Grasslands near the Merced Refuge:

We shot 2 on the club all weekend, GWT and Ross Goose. A fair amount of bird activity foggy on Sunday, we have water on the club for a week now. I expect things to pick up with the weather and new grass growth.

Need to get on killing some geese.

1 GWT on Saturday. Really surprising considering the wind. We got a hell of a show of snow geese raising against the Sutter Buttes. Too bad they were up with the 737's when they got over us.

Nice work guys. I promised my dogs I'd take them every weekend once deer season closed, but only went twice so far. I have taken them for quail, dove, and pheasant a handful of times to keep them happy but they love the water.

Work is killing me this week. I'm gonna go out again Sunday and work out some stress. If it flies, it dies. Even the Ruddies will not be safe this time.

I know the feeling. Best of luck to you.

As for Ruddy’s maybe you’ll get lucky,- I got 3 last week, all of them passing shots surprisingly.

Grrrrrrr.......... Now I'm stuck in Portland because the Southwest jet I'm supposed to go home on is grounded for "mechanical issues". Come Sunday , the ducks are gonna pay for this.

I feel better now - 2 guns in the blind, two limits. More or less a bluebird day with high clouds and a variable breeze. We got into the blind at 1pm, and left at 4pm. Still getting overrun with Spoonbills, but we had 5 Scaup in the bag as well.

More meat for the grinder:

Anyone hunting the Grasslands? Lots of birds on the San Luis Refuge last Tuesday. Hunted Saturday in the fog, could hear them but not see them. Caught a cold and didn't hunt Sunday....Plan on heading out on Wednesday looking forward getting started, it has been slow.

Saturday my blind partner took his 4 year old. They only got 3 but he got buzzed from the back and passed on a number of shots in the thick fog so he wouldn't shoot over his kid and to get the kid lined out on where the birds were.

He and I went yesterday, no fog, no wind, and clouds... aka no action. Ended up spending a little over an hour setting out my pulsator chain and fixing the straw that was blown off the check and into the water.

Friends did well on Wednesday - around 10 birds. One wood duck, some gadwall and teal.

Colusa/Williams area.

I’m going out soon for quail, geese and ducks.

Pretty good day today. Teal, widgeon and spring coming in low. Ended up with widgeon, spring and a great northern. Wind didn’t show up until later than expected but was till a good day.

Slow day, despite the unsettled weather. The good news is that we killed just about everything we shot at, the bad news was that we only killed four ducks..... 3 Gadwall and one bluebill. On the bright side.... No Spoonbills!
